The role of Vina had not yet been cast when the film makers began conducting preproduction makeup tests.Actress Majel Barrett,already set to play Number One,offered to wear the green “Orion slave girl”make up for one test.So the producers could see how the color looked on film.The day after the sample footage had been shot,the producers gathered to view the results.To their surprise,Barrett’s Skin didn’t look at all green;it appeared to be her normal skin tone.Concerned that the Eastman film stock they were using couldn’t distinguish that particular shade of green,the filmmakers conducted the test again,this time smearing much darker green greasepaint onto the actress’s face.But the next day,once again the test came back with Barrett “in the pink”-with perhaps just a hint of a green tinge.A frantic call to the film-processing lab revealed the problem:Lab technicians had assumed the cinematographer got the camera setting wrong…and they had “stayed up all night trying to color-correct the film”.

Vina could rely on the Talosians’powers of illusion to transform her instantly from one manifestation of beauty to another.Her alter ago,actress Susan Oliver,had no such luck;for her ,the transformations took much longer-particularly the changes in skin coulor.Roddenberry’s script to “The Cage”described the Orion slave girl as “Wild!Green skin,glistening as if oiled.”Little did anyone know how prophetic the word “oiled”would be.Prior to filming,makeup designer Fred Phillips would carefully slather a pigmented mixture of Max Factor greasepaint across the areas of Oliver’s body that weren’t covered by her skimpy costume (and there was far more skin than costume) .However,there are always some sections of skin that are oilier than others,and the green makeup had a tendency to blotch,cake and crack.At times,repairing the damage seemed to take as much time as applying the makeup had taken in the first place.Finally,Phillips was assigned a makeup assistant whose sole purpose was to be at the ready whenever the cameras stopped rolling-and then rush in to help Phillips touch up Oliver before filming started again.
