Carnation [kɑːˈneɪʃən] :康乃馨 a plant of any of numerous often cultivated and usually double-flowered varieties or subspecies of an Old World pink (Dianthus caryophyllus) originally flesh-colored but now found in many color variations (from Merriam-Webster )
Carnation单词的来源要追溯到16世纪，当时被叫做’coronation’，coronation现在的意思是‘加冕礼’， 拉丁语中 coronare = "to crown," 因为康乃馨花瓣长的参差不齐jagged flower，象个皇冠crown，另外还因为它常常是制作花环floral garlands的主要用花。到16世纪末，coronation与carnation开始被人们所混淆，carnation是一种颜色，拉丁语词根carni=flesh肉，所以它是肉色，或者我们现在说的裸色，淡粉色。因为康乃馨正好也是颜色，人们就用carnation来称呼这种花。Carnation是一月之花the flower of January，起源于地中海地区，它另用一个专有名词，’dianthus’ ，dios是希腊语中Zeus宙斯的所有格，anthos是希腊语中花的意思，由此它也被作为一种神圣的花’divine flower’。古罗马和古希腊人种植这类花主要是出于它的装点作用。

二十世纪早期，康乃馨成为了母亲节的正式用花official flower，一般白色的代表纯洁purity，粉色的代表一种感谢gratitude。值得一提是，绿色康乃馨，它有着一种独特的含义，这还得追溯回19世纪，Oscar Wilde奥斯卡王尔德经常戴着绿色康乃馨，而他又是同性恋homosexual，在《不可儿嬉》‘The Importance of Being Earnest’主人公 Earnest就是同性恋的代名词，戴着一朵绿色康乃馨是同性恋的秘密象征。 1929年Noel Coward写了一个名叫‘苦涩的甜蜜’的音乐剧Bitter Sweet，绿色康乃馨就出现在歌词中表示同性恋男人穿戴的标志。
