英文《法句经》试译
此英文版《法句经》根据巴利文经转译,与文言版有些许出入。与《华严经》与《金刚经》不同,此经平实简易,如谆谆教诲,为基础法。敬法法师之翻译质朴优美,本无须做蛇足之嫌。但出于个人爱好,又试着翻译一下,可以加深修养,所以利用空闲慢慢的翻译。
Dhammapada

ruled by the heart,
made of the heart.
If you speak or act
with a corrupted heart,
then suffering follows you --
as the wheel of the cart,
the track of the ox
that pulls it.
法为心所引导
为心所左右
因心而生现
若以邪恶之心言行,
痛苦将随之而来,
犹如车轮跟随牛的足印
Phenomena are preceded by the heart,
ruled by the heart,
made of the heart.
If you speak or act
with a calm, bright heart,
then happiness follows you,
like a shadow
that never leaves.
法为心所引导
为心所左右
因心而生现
若以清净光明之心言行,
则安乐常伴
如影随形
He insulted me,
hit me,
beat me,
robbed me'
for those who brood on this,
hostility isn't stilled.
他辱骂我
打我
击败我
掠夺我
若人沉溺于此
则怨恨不能止息
He insulted me,
hit me,
beat me,
robbed me' --
for those who don't brood on this,
hostility is stilled.

若人沉溺于此

Hostilities aren't stilled
through hostility,
regardless.
Hostilities are stilled
through non-hostility:
this, an unending truth.
无论如何,我们不能以敌意消灭敌意,停止敌意最好的方式恰恰是非敌意的,这是无限的真理。
Unlike those who don't realize
that we're here on the verge
of perishing,
those who do:
their quarrels are stilled.
不像那些没有意识到处于毁灭边缘的人,明智之人已经不再做无谓的争执。
Heedfulness: the path to the Deathless.
Heedlessness: the path to death.
The heedful do not die.
The heedless are as if
already dead.
无逸乃通向永恒的道路,放逸则蹈入死途。无逸者长存不朽,放逸者虽生犹灭。
Knowing this as a true distinction,
those wise in heedfulness
rejoice in heedfulness,
enjoying the range of the noble ones.
感悟这一天壤之别,于无逸中获得智慧与法乐,而愉悦于其中的圣境。
The enlightened, constantly
absorbed in jhana,
persevering,
firm in their effort:
they touch Unbinding,
the unexcelled rest
from the yoke.
智者常贯注于禅定,坚忍不拔的致力于自我努力。他们将从束缚中得以解脱,并获得无上的法乐。
Those with initiative,
mindful,
clean in action,
acting with due consideration,
heedful, restrained,
living the Dhamma:
their glory
grows.
首先留意清净自己的行为,深思熟虑并克己的行止于法地,他们的荣耀与日俱增。
Through initiative, heedfulness,
restraint, & self-control,
the wise would make
an island
no flood
can submerge.
当奋勉而无逸,克己并自我调御时,产生的智慧将如岛屿般不为洪水所动摇。
They're addicted to heedlessness
-- dullards, fools --
while one who is wise
cherishes heedfulness
as his highest wealth.
那些沉溺于放逸之徒,堕入愚痴的暗地;而明智之人谨守无逸,并珍视为无价的财富。
Don't give way to heedlessness
or to intimacy
with sensual delight --
for a heedf ul person,
absorbed in jhana,
attains an abundance of ease.
不要放逸自己,沉溺于感官的欲乐;唯无逸之人,全神贯注于禅定,以获得无尽的安宁。
Heedful among the heedless,
wakeful among those asleep,
just as a fast horse advances,
leaving the weak behind:
so the wise.
无逸之于放逸,如醒者置于昏睡者中间;骏马驰驱于驽马之中,智者如是。
Like a fish
pulled from its home in the water
& thrown on land:
this mind flips & flaps about
to escape Mara's sway.
正如鱼从水中抛向陆地时一样,此心亦战栗着摆脱魔的支配。
Hard to hold down,
nimble,
alighting wherever it likes:
the mind.
Its taming is good.
The mind well-tamed
brings ease.
难以制伏的欲念,燃烧着心,驯良你的心,驯良的心方能带来真正的安宁。
The mind protected
brings ease.
Wandering far,
going alone,
bodiless,
lying in a cave:
the mind.
Those who restrain it:
from Mara's bonds
they'll be freed.
善护持的内心带来真正的安乐,身体虽独自漫步于遥远的路途,却长处于黑暗的洞穴,唯有抑制自己的心,才能摆脱来自心魔的镣铐。
