Verona – Tough pitch, hard-fighting opponent and a poor Europa League match to be redeemed. There are plenty of reasons to do well and coach Guidolin’s Udinese are eager to continue the positive row of results they have had in the championship. The coach does not change the game plan and confirms last Thursday’s lineup with Angella and Allan in place of Domizzi and Willians. His pupil Eugenio Corini replies with an offensive 4-3-3 characterized by the fearful trio Thereau-Luciano-Pellissier.
Verona make a good start as Thereau makes two attempts: one is saved by Brkic, the other is powerful but inaccurate. After the initial difficulty, Udinese attack and, with patience and rapidity, block the opponents and force them to fouls. The match is nice and the pace is high, but the squad do not unbalance and thrills are few. On 24 minutes Brkic foils Luciano’s incursion, on 29 Thereau makes his way through the area and shoots near the crossbar. The first attempt of Udinese comes from Di Natale on free-kick, but his shot is too central. The match slows down and Chievo take advantage to gain ground and take the lead. On 38 minutes the corner-kick of Luciano is aimed at the goal and Brkic’s clearance is intercepted by Andreolli who scores. Chievo take the lead and Udinese are forced to chase after them. As seen in the last few matches, after the slap Udinese seem to transform: on 39 minutes Angella equalizes, but the referee calls it out for a non-existent foul. There is no time to feel bitter, because three minutes later Angella himself equalizes with a header. Great reaction, Chievo’s lead has only lasted four minutes. At half-time, there is time for one last thrill as Lazzari tries a spectacular left-foot volley which ends off the goal.
The second half opens with a change for the Zebrette: Heurtaux in place of Coda, injured. Bad luck for Udinese, but the French defender knows what he is doing as, after Brkic’s bad coming out, clears the ball shot by Dainelli. Very good start for No. 75, less for Udinese which risk to lose once again, but after that action Udinese change their balance and start handling the game. Same play as in the first half, both the teams fight for each and every ball. Lazzari gets a splendid chance on 12 minutes but, as he faces Sorrentino, his deflected shot is too weak. Udinese play better, but on 22 minutes the referee punishes Danilo’s alleged hold on Dainelli with a penalty kick. Udinese defender is incredulous, the referee firm. Luciano on the spot: Brkic second-guesses the angle but uselessly, because the shot of the forward hits the crossbar. After this failed penalty, Udinese are back leading the game with order and intensity. There are no more interesting attempts until 41 minutes, when Danilo is the protagonist of another ambiguous episode. Thereau goes offside and the intervention of the Brazilian defender is considered irregular by Mr. Doveri, who expels him for double booking. Another penalty then, but this time Paloschi gets it right and gives Chievo the lead. Being one man down and with few minutes left to play, any squad would feel depressed, but not Udinese: on 46 minutes Basta runs along the flank, serves Angella who, with strength, scores. Incredible draw for Udinese at the Bentegodi!
