English Speech
I believe in the power of education. As for a country, education is one of the main issues facing it. It’s also one of the most decisive factors of the future of a country. As for an individual, the education he or she receives has the power to change his or her entire life.
Recently, I read the memoir of Fawzia Koofi. There is one interesting thing about this book. The English title of this book is “Letters to My Daughters”. While the Chinese title is very catchy and sensational, called “我不要你死于一事无成”. It is the Chinese title that drived me to buy it. The content of this book is not as the same as I thought it would be. Unexpectedly, it gave me a better understanding of the importance of education. In her book, Fawzia Koofi told us her personal learning experience during war. She always wanted to learn more. She had a belief that knowledge was gonna make a big difference to her life. Actually, it did. Now, she has been the first female deputy speaker of the Afghan Parliament. She believes that education can make Afghan a better country and education can change children’s lives. I believe so too.
There are still many countries in the world that can’t guarantee the children the access to education, including China. In our country, most students in rural areas often drop out of high school. At that time, they are just 17 or 18 years old. They have no choice but to work in some factories, which are far away from their hometowns. All of their childhood dreams are left behind and they have no idea what their future will be like. But we have a solution to change this kind of situation. The government should provide them with more accessibility to education and better studying environment.
If an increased number of people can acquire higher education, we are more likely to make our country more civilized and more powerful. Above all, through education, we can create a brighter future for our children. Precisely speaking, this future is created by they own.
I’ll illustrate my words by a story, a story told by Leisie Chang in her TED Talk. Among many of the girls mm has interviewed with, one is Lu Qingmin. Lu Qingmin was a assembly-line worker in a electronics factory. At her free time, she took some skills training courses. She was self-motivated and hard-working. Now she becomes a purchasing assistant in a hardware factory. There is no doubt Lu will lead a more fulfilling life and own a brighter future. But all of this can be attained only when Lu has the chance to take these skills training class. This is the power of education.
I want to conclude my speech with the words of Lu, “A person should have some ambition while she is young. So that in old age she can look back on her life and feel that it was not lived to no purpose!”
Thank you!
