A Brief Introduction to the High School Attached to Hunan Normal University

The High School Attached to Hunan Normal University, designated by the Department of Elementary Education of the Ministry of Education as a member under the Program of the Construction of Exemplary High Schools at the State Level, is a key high school under the direct authority of the Department of Education of the People’s Government of Hunan Province and an exemplary high school in the development of a well rounded education of the Province. With a history of almost 100 years, our school can be traced back to Weiyi School founded in 1905 by Yu Zhimo, a predecessor of the Democratic Revolution. In 1912, our School was renamed as the Privately-run Guangyi High School and then renamed as the High School Attached to Hunan Normal University in January 1955. In the last 100 years or so, our School has cultivated more than 40,000 students from the Province, of which the most prominent are such famous figures as Li Lisan, Liu Zhixun, Ouyang Yuqian, Kang Zhuo, Zhu Rongji, “the Li Brothers” (namely Li Ao, Li Jieshou and Li Leishi, all academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Zhang Luqian, Zhu Zhiti, He Jishan, Zhu Zuoyan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, among numerous others. The school is located at the picturesque Yuelu Mountain. Our school covers an area of 107,000 m2, with a total construction floor space of nearly 90, 000 m2. In October 2000, a campus computer network was established in our school, greatly updating our teaching capacities in the field of information technology. Our school has a staff of nearly 300, of which 114 are senior teachers; 25 of them have received the award for Distinguish Teachers of Hunan Province, 14 of them have consecutively been awarded such honorary titles as Outstanding Principals, Outstanding Teachers or model workers at both the State and the Provincial levels. During the last 20 years, our school has received 9 awards such as honorary titles on the State level as a National Advanced Institution in Education, a National Advanced Institution in Moral Education, a National Advanced Institution in Popular Science and Technology Among Youth, and a National Advanced Institution in Physical Education. Also, our school has received sixteen awards for excellent achievements in educational reform at or above the provincial level. Since 1978, our school has ushered in a new era of development: our teaching qualities are among the top rank in the Province, our achievements in teaching reform and teaching studies have been fruitful and successful. Our distinctive characteristic policy of “revitalizing our school through science and technology and cultivating students in a comprehensive way” has been established. From 1991 to 2003, our students won 18 gold medals and 7 silver medals in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology at the International Olympic Competitions for High-school Students, thus bestowing our school with a eulogy of “a Cradle of Gold Medals”. In August 2000, our school was designated by the Department of Education of the People’s Government of Hunan Province as “an Experimental School in the Reform of High School Syllabus at the Provincial Level” in the overall implementation of teaching reform. Along with the designation, the ideas of “making students the most important, recognizing differences among them, exploring their personal characteristics and aiming at the future” were established. The unprecedented teaching framework of “Two Stresses (namely, stresses on both basic courses and courses for extended disciplinary studies) and Four Directions (namely, cultivating students in the directions of practicality, academic research, personal interests and intellectual accomplishment)” were also implemented. The introduction and the implementation of this new teaching system has provided our students with boundless opportunities for their course studies and their characteristic development. Our school has ushered in the new century by implementing a policy of “focusing our attention on the qualities of education and seeking development in a practical way” in exploring top rank resources, in basic education in order to meet the demands of the modern society. Our School is the core of the multi-form educational pattern. It is supplemented by Guangyi High School, the Teaching Center of International Courses and the Remote Educational Network. We have carried out an active endeavor in supporting basic education in the remote ethnic areas and have established Zhangjiajie Experimental School Under the High School Attached to Hunan Normal University in full cooperation with Zhangjiajie Middle School of Ethnic Nationalities. All these have greatly enriched our educational connotations and enhanced our educational qualities. Just as an old saying goes, “it takes 10 years to grow trees but 100 to cultivate people”. In carrying out the historic mission of reform and advancement, our task is great and the road ahead is long. The High School Attached to Hunan Normal University, a fertile land that vividly embodies the rich historic traditions of Huxiang culture is a pioneer in implementing a complete education in the spirit of reform and renovation.
