[Book News] First ever detective novel back in print after 150 years
I have always thought that the earliest detective novel is The Moonstone but today I am proved wrong. According to a report by the Guardian, it is The Notting Hill Mystery by Charles Felix, dating back to 1862, preceding The Moonstone by some years. Now after 150 years, the novel is to be reprinted. Serialised between 1862 and 1863 in a magazine and published in its entirety in 1863, the story centers on the insurance investigator Ralph Henderson, as he works to bring the sinister Baron "R___" to justice for murdering his wife to obtain a large life insurance payout.
