There's nothing noble and nice about dying in the mud, unless you die gracefully and that 's not only noble but brave.
No subject is terrible if the story is true if the prose is clean and honest, and if it firms grace and courage under pressure.
You will never write well if you're in fear of dying.
Have you ever make love to a truely great woman? And when you made love to her, do you feel true and beautiful passion, and you, at least for that moment, lose your fear of death? I believe that love that is true and real creates a rest period from death. All cowardness comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And when the man who is brave and true looks death squirrely in the face, it is because they love with sufficient passion to push death out of their minds, until it returns like it does to all men. And you must make really good love again.
We all fear death and question our place in the universe. The artist's job is not to come despair but to find an anti-dose for the emptyness of existence.
