Movie review: After Shock 唐山大地震
Runningtime: 139 minutes
Director: Xiaogang Feng
Leading roles: Fan Xu, JingchuZhang, Chen Li
Genre: Emotion, Ethics, Disaster
This movie mainly focuses on how one specific Chinese familyreacts in and after a disastrous earthquake which in reality took place in Hebei Provincein Chinain 1976. The family consists of a young couple, and their daughter and son. Unfortunately, the cruelearthquake takes the life of the husband. The wife has to make a heart-wrenchingchoice between saving the daughter and saving the son. They are both under astone board in the remains but saving either of them will cause the falling ofthe board and the other to die. The mother decides to save the son. Thedaughter is actually alive and rescued by the soldiers. The mother and thedaughter finally face each other again.
I think this movie deserves to be watched. Firstly, it stimulatespeople to think about their attitude towards gender. You may be motivated tothink whether the mother chooses to save her son because she thinks herdaughter will understand her or because she holds the idea that a male is moreimportant than a female. Secondly, the actors and actresses performed vividly, making the movie more touching and more real. Thirdly, the dialect used bypeople of Hebeimay make you laugh your head off.
However, because the sound effect and the visual image donot contribute much to the enjoyment of the movie, I do not recommend youspending much money watching it in a cinema.
