So I got a chance to come to Egypt and get some insight about what was the r evolution and Egypt really like. I never thought I was gonna to have such a marvellous time working, living and hanging around together with 17 other Let’s Dreamer from 10 countries.
I was really excited (also mixed with a little bit nervous) when first time in my life saw Cairo come closer and closer from window while landing. I knew Cairo is a big city but I was still amazed by how huge the city and how crowed the building it has.
Cairo was quiet different from what I thought, it’s actually quiet peace (most of places) and green. People going to work, shops selling fresh juice, elder people having shishaa in café, It feels like the city has never been disturbed by any chaos or conflict coused by the demonstration. Only the graffiti with slogan on the wall reminded me the r evolution indeed had spread to and influenced every layer of the society.
From the culture where I was brought up, r evolution was quite a remote thing and to some extent always reminds me of war, death of civilian, violence, and anti- s ociety. Besides, it’s a subtle sensitive issue. So when first came, I really hesitated a little bit in the first place whether it’s proper or polite to talk and interview about how the local viewed and thought about the revolution. But soon I found what I worried was totally unnecessary. Quite different from what I supposed, people here were glad and willing to talk about polity. They also really want the outside to know more about how exactly the revolution is and how’s Egypt now instead what had been reported, for media may do nothing but mislead the public. I’m not sure if it is like a positive change after the revolution, for people were not scare anymore to reveal their feelings because there’s more freedom of speech, or, it’s already rooted in the nature of Egyptian people to solve problems by discussing and debating.
I was really regret now about not going to T ahrir Square myself, for safety and schedule reason. But I managed to talk to some locals which help me gain a better indepth understanding about the r evolution from the eye of a Egyptian.
During the interview, I was deeply impressed by how proud and optimistic Egyptian are both to the r evolution and to the future of Egypt. Just like a girl mentioned during workshop, the revolution unevitablely bring unsettled to Egyptian Society. Economic situation is also going down, as can be seen clearly especially to tourism. But at the same time, Egyptians are come to known about their truly want which is f reedom, and better living standard, and a better life.
Interview with local people:
(It might be more respect to keep their original words of interviewees.)
(H: Henrietta L: the local)
-H: What’s your viewpoint about the r evolution?
-L: Countries like Morocco, they have the same coast, the same kilometers like we have. We have the same, about 3000m coastlines in our country. They eat fish in a very cheap price, and they export around the world. Why Egypt have the same kilometers of water but the fish is every expensive and we never export, we import tons of fish from around the world. Why? Because there is a very bad ruler, a very bad president, a very bad ministries. Everything ruling Egypt is spoiled.
If we take two kinds of fish for our lunch and u know, it’s about 30 pounds. For beef, it’s about 70 pound per kilo. When it comes to Ramadan, they are more expensive. According to the season.
You see a lot of tourist places in Egypt that bring the gold to Egypt. We have the Suez Cannel that brings the gold to Egypt. But we are still poor because there are no minds. There are no good minds that should be established, a good future for Egypt. After the revolutions all these bad leaders are gone so we are joining now to build a new leaders to give them a chance to rebuild the Egypt. That’s it. This is my view.
Every Egyptian in Egypt is very proud of this revolution and very happy with it. Because we thought that we will never get rid of these leaders. We thought that but when all Egyptians stand like one man we achieve it all between weeks. I think in ten days or eleven days.
-H: But it still has d emonstrations these days.
-L: That’s because now it’s a transition period in Egypt between having another president for Egypt. So until we have another president, a future president, the military are ruling Egypt. People are demonstrating because they need to hurry the elections hurry stuffs had to be down. Sometimes they are not having the right to be demonstrating because everything should takes it’s time.
-H: So in your viewpoint what is the deep reason behind this r evolution? Is it c orruption or something like that?
-L: Yes. That’s the reason, corruption. Also the beginning was because our ex-president (Hosni Mubarak) wanted to get the presidency for the coming period to his son. So it will be a continuous failure for Egypt. That’s why people demonstrating.
-H: How do you think of the situation right now? Is it good or bad?
-L: Very good. Look at other experiences around the world, u can look at Turkey, U can look at Brazil, Malaysia, all these countries made there revolution, then they become one of the most advanced developing countries in the world. So we hope Egypt will be so because our youth are very well educated. So we can build another good Egypt in the future. I’m sure of it.
-H: I talked to some people, and I found that majority of them are all very proud of the Revolution.
-L: Around the world many nationalities are looking at our revolutions in a very proudly look.
-H: I think it’s good because sometimes it really need courage, u need some kind of braveness to speak out you thought and even if it maybe you’ll be killed or something like it
-L: All the time, I’m asking why we are not manufacturing a lot of product in our country? Why every each single thing we imported from China, Japan, and Korea. Why?
Why? We have people, we have brains and we have well educated people. Because ours government was stupid. Stupid. They don’t look at its people. They look to themselves only for many years ago. Now we have the ability to do so. To have factories, new manufactory products in our life, stuff like that will make us more and richer more developed.
-H: Actually I found out that the gap between people is really big in Egypt. Very rich or very poor.
-L: Yes. The standard of living in Egypt became very bad. Look at us. My husband is a policeman from a very well educated family. Me too, from a very good sociable and well-educated family but our standard of living is ordinary. Not suited to the effort we do or to the standard we should live. The officers in your countries earn much more money than here in Egypt. Because they give each one the money he deserved to live in appropriate way. The bad policy in Egypt used to give the rich people more and more money and for the poor people more poverty. So the gap is widen, day by day.
I’m happy for Farid, my little boy that they will live for sure better life in Egypt in the coming days. I’m sure of it. Because justice make a country goes better. Once you have justice, you have good minds, everything will be ok.
-H: So what do you think that made the change, to demonstrate in this way, to speak out?
-L: We were living so afraid all the time, afraid to speak out. Before the demonstration, the police were being ordered to protect the president. So they were been ordered to catch anybody speaks out and put them in prisons. That’s why people are afraid. But everything is getting better now, the police are not ordered to do so. Because the presidents are not there the ministries are not there anymore so everything is better now.
Situation at that time are worsen and people cannot stand anymore. And it was the revolution from all kind of people. To be more specific, the politics, parties or something like that. All people, the poor and the rich, everybody in Egypt are not convinced that the circumstances are healthy for their Children afterwards. So all of us say no, the same want. All of us,the young people, the old people, the rich and poor people. Everyone said no. This is not the Egypt that we need. Even the policeman, they refused what they’re ordered to do. They talked from ministries and president for taking people in prisons for speaking out, the stuff like that. Now they are more comfortable.
