Skepticism is very important for people to learn about the science and knowledge, sometimes it is the basic skill for the students to make creative thinking. If the students just have the ability to passively accept the knowledge, they will only be a machine or a component of the big machine.
Our aim in encouraging the student’s critical thinking is not to overturn the theories and techniques which are taught to them, but to encourage the students learn these things more effectively and deeply. Hence, in a sense, a student can put forward a question on a subject only when he or she has, seriously considered the subject. In addition, after a student has raised a question, he will search for data to support his or her point of view, and it is where the through investigation from which real understanding comes is based. Thus by questioning about the subject more effectively. In the common situation, when a student really believe and in love with the subject, he will learn much more about it.
However, the current examination system is hard to test the skeptic ability of the students, which lead to a bad situation that most students accept knowledge passively just for a higher examination score. The whole evaluation system of the society is also based on the score which is given by the education institution, in order to survive in the competitive society the students have to learn the knowledge for the score instead of the knowledge itself.
Besides, the students are not going to be students forever. They will be scholars, researchers, engineers, politicians and may be the president. It is particular important to cultivate their ability of skeptic thinking, for the life-long self-education for them. When a student just can accept the subject passive, his ability of self-education can never be improved. However, the function of our education system is to educate people not to put the knowledge into the students mind. There is no such thing that after the 22 years education, the students can work out every problem in the future of his career. in the future development of the students skeptical thinking can be the best teacher for them to learn deeply and solve the problem more effectively.
In conclusion, critical thinking is an indispensable part of our education. We need measure to encourage our students to question and challenge what they learn; we need measures to free students from limitations of being assessed only on the basis of examination marks; we need to create an atmosphere in which skepticism is encouraged.
