The War of the Worlds
Plot
In the 20th century, England is invaded by Martians. They put a kind of cylinder underground. One day the cylinder opens, a huge three-legged fighting-machine comes out of it. It is armed with the heat-ray, which is invisible but can burn everything in its path to ash. The narrator’s home is so closed to the triple that he has to take his wife to Leatherhead to stay with his brother, and he himself return to London. Along the way to, he witnesses a frantic mass evacuation. As more triples land on England, the narrator is trapped in a half-destroyed building, in which he meets a irrational curate. Due to his silly behavior, the curate is dragged away by the Martians. Eventually, the narrator reunites with his wife. Surprisingly, the Martians are killed by the simplest germs in the earth.
Character Analysis
I’d like to analyze the curate’s character. He is a faithful Christian and he’s willing to listen to God’s word. One thing wrong with him is that he only prays but never takes actions. Christians believe that if you have tried your best and still can not solve the problem, you can leave it to the Lord. As an old saying goes, “God helps those who help themselves.” We should firstly make efforts. Compared to those who consider themselves as the master of the universe, he comes to another extreme. He hopes others to save him but didn’t try to survive on his own. From this aspect, I think he deserves his ending—being dragged away by a triple.
Self Response
Finishing reading this book, I thought the writer was intended to praise the power of the nature and warn human-beings not to regard themselves as the master of the universe. In the writer’s eyes, nature is God and God is nature. They are the one who is in control.
In the first paragraph of the book, Wells wrote, “With great confidence, people believed that they were in control of their lives. No one gave a thought to possible threats from other planets.” I believe that people should always fear something so that they would not be too proud to see themselves clearly. There is a saying “Those who are brave fear nothing.” However, in my opinion, only when you know there is a person you can always look up to will you be truly brave. In the end of the novel, I was surprised to see that the unbreakable machine is defeated by the smallest germs. Having thought twice, I found it’s an interesting ending. It indicates that the most powerful weapon is the creation made by God. Besides, one scene impressed me most was that a man stretches his hands up to the sky and thanks God.
As a science fiction, the war of the worlds made some interesting predictions. For example, the function of the Heat-ray simply reminds me of the concept of lacer. What’s more, the inhuman robotic ship landing on Mars is three-legged, the same as the Martian’s fighting machine!
