How we learn? -1
My first authentic English book reading.
Introduction:
A good hunter tailors the trap to the prey.
* The approaches that require computer software, gadgets or meditation aren’t get-smarter schemes
* Seek out a ‘quite place’ make a dedicated study area in order to stick to one learning ritual (related to section 2 chapter 1 p45
* Long division or playing a musical scale (not very useful because the brain picks up patterns more efficiently when presented with a mixed bag or related task than when it’s force-fed just one)
* Take just one implication
Nothing right or wrong way, it’s that there are different strategies which suited to capturing a particular type of information.
Section 1: form the theoretical foundation for all that follows. (Cognitive science: a step up the ladder from biology, clarifies how remembering, forgetting, and learning are related.)
Section2: detail techniques that strengthen our hold on facts ( retention tools)
Section 3 : focus on comprehensive techniques ( solve problems in math and science, long complex assignments, presentations, term papers, blueprint and compositions)
Section 4: to co-opt the subconscious mind to amplify the techniques we’ve just described
Our worst enemies-laziness,ignorance,distraction-can also work in our favour.
Section 2- s3
Consistency has been a hallmark of education manuals since the 1900s, develop a ritual, a daily schedule, a single place and time set aside for study and nothing else.
Reinstatement: recall is better if the environment of the original learning is reinstated.
1. External and internal Contextual cues can help you reinstate: an absence of cues to reinstate help study subconsciously; encode the absence of (sound, drugs)
Internal mental states: moods
Study: control where, when, and how much
2. Variation of environmental context can give more opportunities to revive recall/ strong recall improvement
Factual:
When you’re reviewing for an exam, not to work straight from their notes, put the notes aside, and create new outline, reorganising the material which forces you to rethink about the material in a different way.
3. Each alternation of the routine such as learn different skills could further enriches the skills being rehearsed, making them sharper and more accessible for a longer period of time. (This kind of experimenting itself reinforces learning, and makes what you know increasingly independent of your surroundings.)
