25 September Attended first training session at the Magistrates Court
I went to the Magistrates Court and the Supreme Court with Ruth today. We heard two cases, both were of criminal matters.
We heard the first case in Court One in the Magistrates Court. The accused committed a DUI offence. His lawyer was trying to persuade the magistrate not to restrict his licence for it would make it even harder for him to get employed. The magistrate did not take the accused's employability into account but focused more on the fact that the accused drove when he was under a drive licence restriction for his convenience which undermined the rule of law .It is the rule of law that allows us to live in this society without worrying about that we will be injured out of the blue. However, once a person's action has undermined the rule of law, he needs to face consequences of his action.
The second case was about an armed burglary. The issue presented was whether the accused was the man who had committed the burglary at a Chapman shop.
Next week, I'll meet Ruth again to get more training. It is likely that I will be given an opportunity to accompany a client to court in the foreseeable future. I feel very exciting.
I had a very good day today at the courts. I've learnt new things about court proceedings and trials and met lovely Ruth.
When I was sitting there listening to those counsellors presented their case, I felt motivated. I want to be one of them. I want to make legal practice my life-long career.
