What PKU has taught me
I spent seven years studying and living in Peking University which I am deeply indebted to. Although I have already left that place and been away for almost two years, I am still sentimentally attached to it and feel a strong sense of belonging. Such a sense becomes even much stronger whenever I hear any one who does not study there questions it or criticizes it. When I was younger, I used to react fiercely and tried to defend my university whenever I heard any opposition or attack. However, now I would just smile at him or her and say nothing for my school, because I know my school herself would also do such kind of a thing. We are not afraid of being challenged and we do not care. All we do is just being ourselves. That is what PKU has taught me.
She told me how to stand opposite voices and derision, how to behave humbly and show talents appropriately, how to treat so-called "authorities" and maintain individuality, how to cooperate with others and refuse to comply with improper command. I feel grateful because she told me that the greatest man or woman is the one who knows that he or she does not know. She revealed to me that the world is so large and so shall be my mind. She cultivates my courage, modesty, intelligence, and patience. Moreover, she taught me never to believe any book or any so-called expert. The only thing one needs to draw power from is oneself.
For all of those above, I feel proud of my university and never regret my seven years there. That place does not only offer me a full coverage of knowledge, ranging from literature to history, from international relationship to politics, from arts to logical thinking, but it also teaches me how to doubt, how to think, and how to remain dynamic, efficient, peaceful, and ambitious.
Those who never went there would not acquire all those precious values.
