Personal Statement
My father, who liked to arrange everything for his son, forced me to study science in high school and chose the engineering major for college because he hopes me to become a scientist or an engineer. Admittedly, I once was a rebellious boy, and tried to struggle against my father. I just wanted to find my own way and thought being a writer was my dream. Nevertheless, after studying this electronic major for nearly 3 years, I gradually come to understand what it actually means, and realize that I have been attracted by this amazing major. Electronics is a wonderful world and it can be used to create so many useful products for the society. It’s interesting and appealing. So now I am thankful for my father’s choice and I hope that I can further my study in this field.
I can still remember my first semester in university, one of the toughest periods of my college life. I left my hometown Guangzhou City alone and went to a new City Changchun by a 36-hour train. I needed to adapt to the new surroundings and live independently. Fortunately, I made it. Also, I began to have my college courses, which were challenges for me because Changchun University of Science and Technology was famous for its strictness in Northeastern China. All the teachers here are strict with the students, and this could be reflected on the difficulty of the final exam. To be honest, I did meet some difficulties at first, but ultimately I could understand the courses better and passed them with high scores through my persistence and hard working. Thanks to the strict educational system and the difficult final exams, without either I couldn't master the real knowledge of the basic courses such well, which will definitely contribute my future study.
In the second year, I began to study major courses like Complex Function, Signals and System, Electronic Circuit and some electronic experiments, all brought me deeper to the fantastic scientific world. What attracted me most were the laboratory courses, in which I could transform the classroom knowledge into practice like making an Adjustable DC Stable Source Circuit. I even made a radio successfully in lab and I felt so exciting and unforgettable when finally heard some voice from the loudspeaker of the radio after many failures, and that’s electronics’ charm. What’s more, I got the first place in the final exams, and won the first scholarship. I hold that the first scholarship is one of the most cogent evidences to show one’s ability in a particular discipline, so, I was inspired by this certificate of merit entirely and felt that maybe I could make some achievements in the electronic field. In the meanwhile, I was interested in TOEFLibt and GRE, and considering that whether I would have the opportunity to study overseas.
Obviously, I already had an answer in my mind at that moment and I knew it’s time to fight for my youth. The education of western countries indeed fascinates me, and I also know good command of English is an essential bridge to access the top electronic technology. Luckily, English is my strength and I have passed the CET-6 (a Chinese traditional college English test) easily with a high score of 570. But unlike CET-6, TOEFLibt is a bigger challenge which requires a comprehensive ability of reading, listening, speaking and writing. From the forth semester, I worked more diligently than before because I must take the core courses and the preparation of TOEFLibt into consideration simultaneously. I worked assiduously in class and utilized every minute to study English in my spare time. I even made a specific study schedule and followed it every day. Although those days were laborious, they meant a lot to me and taught me much. Now, I possess solid basis of electronic knowledge as well as good English ability, and the National Electronic Design Contest and GRE are my next targets.
Besides the regular study life, I also pay attention to develop my comprehensive ability. As I have said, being a writer once was my dream, but now, I consider it as avocation. I am in charge of a sport curriculum and the editing work of a whole page for the school newspaper and create many novels on my blog. In addition, I have participated in several student organizations, in which I practiced my ability of cooperation and my leadership.
“You will never know where will be your next station, and just follow your mind and seize the opportunity.” The sentence is my motto. I consider this program as a great opportunity and I am sure I will be regretful if I miss University of Ottawa. I know there are still quiet a lot for me to learn, but I believe I can finish the graduate studies excellently and I hope to be an outstanding engineer in the future through years of endeavor.
