Aim of the course:
Due to the evolving means of telecommunication, the aim of the course is to introduce students to psychology in cyberspace. Students will be introduced to key theories and current empirical research conducted in the field of cyberpsychology.
Gained knowledge: Student understands the concept of cyberpsychology and its link to the development of identity within society; is able to describe the way relationships are formed in cyberspace; understands how the use of digital technologies can affect the development of children and adolescents; is able to demonstrate possible risks that may occur in cyberspace; is able to describe and explain forms of remote education; is able to identify the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning and face-to-face learning.
Gained skills: Student is able to do a literature review and assess relevance of information. He is able to question any arguments made; is able to construct and substantiate his arguments as well as to oppose those he doesn’t agree with during class discussions.
Syllabus:
The ‘self‘ in the cyberspace - an overview of the formation of social identity in an online environment
Online relationships - an overview of the formation of relationships in online environment using psychological theories; online dating; internet infidelity
Use of digital technologies in children and adolescents - the effects of internet use on the development of children and adolescents; illegal content and activities; cyberbullying
Online education - e-learning; e-learning versus face-to-face learning; 3D learning environments
Online gaming and addictions - an overview of Internet addictions; aggressive video games and their impact on the development of social identity
Crimes in the online environment - an overview of online illegal activities such as fraud and illegal downloads; cyber harassment; hate crimes; cyberattacks
Online support and healthcare - an overview of e-therapies; immersive virtual environment as aids to treatment
