The Hall of Heads
I ran away from home a few years ago when I was 15 years old. I haven’t been back since. We lived on an old farm, but my parents didn’t grow anything, they rented the land out to Mr. Henderson who raised crops. Mr. Henderson used our big barn as well. Our little barn was my parent's territory, and I was not allowed in. They kept it locked with a padlock whenever they weren’t in there. Every month or so, my uncle Tony came over with his truck, backed it into the small barn, and left with his truck bed full of sacks. The sacks looked lumpy, sort of like they held potatoes, but maybe something bigger.
Before he filled the truck, we’d all have a family dinner, but I didn’t enjoy them. Uncle Tony was an unpleasant man, grouchy and quick to anger. I don’t think he was my real uncle. My aunt and uncle Helen and Hank were just friends of my parents, but I’d always called them uncle and aunt. I liked them a lot better than uncle Tony, they were fun to have around. After we ate, uncle Tony and my father would go into my parent's office and talk for a while. They never talked loudly enough for me to hear them, even though my room was right next to the office. After the business was done, Tony would load his truck with the lumpy sacks and then leave.
I’d always wondered what was in the little barn, but my parents wouldn’t talk about it and got upset when I’d try. I’d learned to not mention it. When I was nine years old, I got a peek into the barn through a crack in the siding. I couldn’t see much, but I did see racks with things that looked like cabbages growing in them. There were dim red lights above the racks. Later, something got moved in front of the crack inside the barn and I couldn’t see in there anymore. When I was 15, I got an itch to see what was in the small barn. I’d been watching lock-picking channels on YouTube, and knew how to open the lock without damage. I cut two strips of a soft drink can with scissors. I then used them as shims between the shackle of the lock and the locking lug. I was in!
I wasn’t ready for what I saw in the racks. I don’t know what I expected to see, but it was worse than anything I could have guessed. The things growing in the racks weren’t cabbages. They were human heads, some tiny, others were fully grown. When I saw this, I got sick to my stomach and felt panicked. I left home that day and I’ve never been back. The worst part? What really freaked me out? All the heads had my face.
