How do I benefit from Toastmasters?
Well, how do I benefit from Toastmasters?
Firstly, similar experience. Old man said in the previous mail that I would certainly benefit from the experience. LOL old man has started a free class Fish Bowl since four years ago, which opens to all university students and staff. The Fish Bowl runs in the similar way to Toastmasters, where participants can practice speaking and have conversation in English only.
Secondly, social networking. Toastmasters are exactly a big family full of interesting people. They are very nice. I am so glad to meet them all.
Charles Chow (District Division Q Governor) really impressed me with his social networking. He started a conversation with me when I first joined in the QQ group. He explained to me the skill of listening and speaking is highly preferred. On my first visit, I got lost on the way there. I arrived 10 min late for meeting. During the break, Charles came over to talk with guests like me. It was cool, although I was not confident with my spoken English. In the table topic section, I was the last one invited to the lectern to talk about the difference of networking inside and outside campus. However, it turned out that firstly, I didn’t hear the question carefully. Secondly, I was not ready to talk. Thirdly, I was weak in my spoken English at the moment. So…Fortunately, I was not blamed for my poor performance since we do things in a positive way.
Thirdly, excellent teamwork. I was assigned VPPR (Vice President Public Relations) two weeks ago. I am so glad to join in the officer team. Public relations is a deliberate, planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between organization and its public. My current job is to promote its reputation by establishing new social media and developing it to a large extent. Concerning my potential readers, I have found myself more serious about writing for public with regard to attitude. Other than copying and pasting, my blogs are designed to be original and free-style.
Fourthly, gelivable mentorship. Being a new Toastmaster, I was assigned a mentor Jiaping Xu (Kungfu Panda Xu) to track and assist with my personal development in Toastmasters. Generally speaking, my mentor is an interesting person. He does well in critical thinking and thinks independently. He appears serious sometimes, but more with humorous. During evaluation, he starts with the weak points first second and third, and comes to good points slowly. He has a good memory in the case that he can easily track my previous speech from long ago. He commented on my area contest performance in contrast with the Ice Break four weeks ago. That’s amazing! Well, I really appreciate his help to learn better communication and be more confident. To pay it forward, I write a blog about each mentor review, in the hopes that it would be of some value to those who might be interested in. The blogs are available on our website (http://site.douban.com/179514/widget/notes/11871590/).
Fifthly, active member. I have been considered after 90s several times in the club, though we all know it cannot be true. I appear energetic and take an active part in club events. I really appreciate with my change because for the past year working in the government department, I was unhappy and found myself in low spirit once a while. I was aware of the urgency of change at that moment. Change does happen when I first came to Toastmasters, I knew this is the place and I belong to here. I have been really engaged to volunteering in Toastmaster for the past weeks, and I am really happy with changes. To tell the truth, I was challenged because I have difficulty keeping my life and Toastmasters balanced. I am still learning about time management to get everything done happily.
Frankly, I am not sure if I should post it to our website for personal experience sharing. It is sort of private but … … to think it twice, it could be of some value to whoever might be interested in.
Finally, don’t count your years, count your memories! Learn, Grow and Excel, only by doing and practicing!
B.Regards,
Emily Cai(VPPR)
