Without the prosperity of the first-tier cities, nor the tranquility of the middle and small cities, Nanjing was pushed to modernization neither fish nor fowl just as the same as any other second-tier cities. Nevertheless, I am still fond of it. Now or then, wherever I glanced the characters of it, whether it's the background or the flash, i felt sentiment.
Wei Wei once wrote a short novel, read as Starting from Nanjing. It was around 40 pages, and the scenes were here and there. Xiao Feng from a small town was a Juris Doctor, young and ambitious, not satisfied to common life,( here, common life means the study life behind the crowd.)nor fit in the small town. He was travelling between the cities regardless of his body, youth or soul to rely on an old lady just to rent an apartment in the downtown. Xiao Feng had loves and hates toward big cities, he could not reject the bureaucracy of Beijing or the merchandism of Shanghai. However, he could not agree with those cities, he went back to Nanjing at last.
Nanjing was mentioned in Wei Wei's novel out of favor. She said it's a diffident, quiet and simple city, and she chose to stay there out of her personality. In my point of view, Nanjing was neither big nor small, a modern city with intellectuality and marketplace, very suitable for the novel. Wei Wei in life was an ordinary man a little bit distant from society and group. She lived in Beigushan in her early stage, near the Centra gate where i travelled daily, close to the train station and bus station. When it came to the festivals, there were crowded with outsiders, crowd as flood. That's a crowded marketplace. I can still think of what she mentioned in the novel, standing on the balcony above the dust, hugging oneself and overlapping, watching the stream of people and pedlars doing business. In the evening go downstair and have some late snack and feel the connection of the stall owner's hardness... This sentiment of isolation and closeness is very much alike Zhang Ailing.
The writers of Nanjing local were rare, one of which is Ye Lingfeng. I was deeply impressed by his localism. Not the same as Wei Wei's stillness, Ye Lingfeng's straight uncovered passion when considering his hometown was more like Nanjing's Big carrot. He habitant in Hongkong in his late years, but he always bought everything that was related to Jin Ling(Nanjing), no matter what it was, chorography, herbs, and he just bought back home and make explanations for them. Many outdated stuff, such as salted lettuce with rice in Summer, and the crab shell without meat steamed to be the inner decoration. He was always pleased to talk about them, which was the endless desire for our modern Nanjing citizens.
When penetrating into Ye's Phenomena of nature vegetation, you would notice his wide knowledge, and his insight to the Eight Trigram. He was very well-informed. However, you might also sense a loneliness behind the compassion. There was an article written about cypress vine-- One Summer, while living in one lonely street in the South part of the town, i lived a hard and lonely life. So i planted some cypress vine in the little patio which killed a Summer time. Those tinny bright red candled flowers and leaves as fine as the pine needles made me raptured. I often sat on the stone stage for long, but never saw their growing up. However, i often found them shoot a lot after an overnight sleep. ( Quoted from Flowers in Summer by Ye Lingfeng.)
I went to Ye's old yard in the South part of the town because of that article. His yard used to be Jiu'er Street, now named Changle Road, close to the Confucius Temple, which is very busy and rumpus. It is so crowded that you could not even imagine the tranquility of that cypress vine days any more. If you move the scene to the old Southern town, where full of mossy broken lanes, it will do. Speak of it, i could even smell the Old Nanjing.
