This fifth consecutive AA Shanghai Summer School will investigate new computational design approaches in architecture and urbanism, within the context of Shanghai, one of the world’s most rapidly growing, emblematic twenty-first century cities.
已经连续举办了五年的AA上海暑期学校，今年将继续探讨新的计算机辅助设计的相关技术，研究建筑和城市问题，并将研究背景定位在上海——世界上增长最迅速、最代表二十一世纪的城市之一。
Shanghai (上海) literally translates as ‘on sea’. The topic for this year’s program concerns an imminent crisis facing the megalopolis of Shanghai – its rising sea levels. This condition is exacerbat¬ed by the insatiable demand for land for the city’s continuing urban densification, growth, and expansion. We will investigate paradigms related to complex, natural systems, and the potential for greater symbiosis with artificial, man-made urbanism. Design proposals will negotiate the paradoxical fluid forces of urban development and environmental change, seeking new sensitive design prototypes for the low-lying aquatic landscape of Shanghai.
上海从字面上翻译主题为“海上”。今年的课题是一个上海将会紧迫危机面对的一个问题——其上升的海平面。由于其城市化加深、密度加大、城市范围扩张，这些因素都加剧了海平面上升这一问题的所带来的矛盾。我们的研究方向将着眼于利用具有复杂性的自然体系，将其结合人所需要的各种要素而发展出的城市理论。我们的设计题目将针对如何面对城市的扩展和环境的变化，在上海这样一个临海城市，寻求一种面对外界更为灵活应对的系统。
The course will be taught by tutors from the AA School, HKU, and other visitors, in a two-part program. Over the first three days of the workshop, computational design systems will be introduced in a series of intensive ‘tooling-up’ sessions as the basis for investigating associative design concepts and methodologies. The aim of these design exercises is to introduce expertise in generative, algorithmic and parametric approaches with which to ad¬dress topics such as urban growth, system-based organization and formal diversity. In a second stage of the workshop, students will develop design proposals responding to a shared studio brief focusing on developing new models of urban growth densification through dynamic, performative architectural scenarios. Students will apply code-based modeling, simula¬tion and fabrication techniques, towards multiple, variable and recursive prototypes for a range of environmental, infrastructural and urban systems, driven by scenarios of future incremental, adaptive growth and change.
课程分为两个阶段，老师分别来自AA学校、香港大学和其他客座讲师。前三天的课程主要为大强度的软件培训，为学生后期的设计提供一定的基础。其主要目的在于介绍给学生以系类的生成性、算法性和参数化的系统，针对城市问题、各类系统体系和形态多样化等问题。课程的第二阶段，学生在统一的任务书要求下，设计针对城市增长问题的动态可应对建筑体系。学生将应用一系列脚本基础的建模、模拟和实体模型，建立具有复杂性和多样性的建筑原型，来解决由于未来城市增长和海平面上升所带来的一系列环境、基础设施等城市问题。
Alongside studio-based design tutorials and seminars, a series of lectures, presentations, and a public symposium will address contempo¬rary topics related to the theme of the workshop. During the workshop, we will tour the water-towns surrounding Shanghai, to investigate traditional means with which to address these compelling yet tenuous environmental conditions.
除了软件和设计课，课程中还将包括一系列和课程主题相关的当代建筑理论和实践的讲座和交流。期间还将安排在上海周围水镇的考察，从传统中发掘应对此类问题的方法和策略。
Eligibility
The workshop is open to current architecture and other design students, recent graduates and young professionals. All applicants should submit a CV and portfolio. Software Requirements: Skills in 3D modeling and scripting will be advantageous, yet are not essential.

招收人员为建筑类和其他设计类在校学生、毕业生和在职人员。申请人请提供个人简历和作品集。软件能力： 具备一定的3D建模和脚本编写能力将为学员的学习带来很大的便利，但不是硬性要求。
Applications
The deadline for applications is 31 July 2011. Application forms and additional information are available online at: www.aaschool.ac.uk/shanghai and applications can be submitted to: visitingschool@aaschool.ac.uk. All participants travelling from abroad are responsible for securing any visa required for entry to China, and are advised to contact their home embassy early. After payment of fees, the AA School can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop. Applicants are advised to contact the AA as soon as possible in order to apply and confirm a place, as space is limited. Places can only be reserved upon receipt of a completed application form and full fees, sent to Sandra Sanna, Administrative Coordinator of the AA Visiting School.

Schedule & Venue
The school runs from 12 to 20 August 2011 in Shanghai. This is an intensive, studio-based programme requiring full-time participation. The workshop will be hosted at The University of Hong Kong Shanghai Study Centre in Shanghai.

时间为2011年八月12号到八月20号。课程时间安排紧凑，教学强度大，是以设计班为基础的全日制教学。课程地点为香港大学上海学习中心。
Accommodation & Costs
Accommodation during the workshop is not provided, but accommodation at an affordable hotel can be advised. The AA Visiting School requires a fee of £650 per participant which includes a £50 Visiting Student Membership, made payable to the AA School of Architecture. Fees do not include flights or accommodation. Although limited use of computers and prototyping machinery will be provided, students are advised to bring their own laptops, digital equipments and model making tools. Please ensure that all equipment you are bringing is covered by insurance. The AA School takes no responsibility for items lost or stolen whilst travelling to/from or attending the workshop.
住宿 & 费用
