Have you ever heard about Hong Kong stand-up comedian and popular TV actor Wang Zi Hua?
If the answer is "no", it's a pity because you have missed so much fun.
If the answer is "yes", then congratulations to you! Wang Zi Hua is going to hold his stand-up comedy show "Inadequate for Children"(儿童不宜)in Macau in June 13. It will be his second show in Macau, though he has already held many stand-up comedy shows in Hong Kong.
Now,I'm going to tell you something about stand-up comedy and the first person who introduced it to the Chinese community.
Stand-up comedy is a style of comedy where a single comedian speaks directly to the audience with the aid of a hand-held microphone. The comedian usually recites a fast-aced succession of humorous stories, short jokes, and one-liners, delivering a relatively steady stream of "laughs" to the audience.
Unlike Xiangsheng (相声)--a performance art in China, Stand-up comedy can not only make people laugh, but also deliver an in-depth message behind the humour. Many stand-up comedians work for years to develop 45 minutes of material, slowly perfecting them over time. So behind the laughter, stand-up comedy is hard, lonely and vicious.
Stand-up comedy has a long history in the West. But in China, it was Wang Zi Hua who started doing stand-up in Cantonese in 1990. And he created a local Cantonese term for stand-up comedy --"dong du xiao" (栋笃笑), which describes the form very precisely. Since then, Stand-up comedy is very popular among Hong Kong people.
During the last 18 years, Wang Zi Hua has already held ten Stand-up comedy shows in total, including “A Bitter History of Eastern Hollywood” (娱乐圈血肉史), “Sexy Family” (色情家庭), “Then Where to Go” (跟住去边度), “The God of Money” (末世财神), “Before 1997” (秋前算账), “Sap Ha Sap Ha” (拾下拾下十年栋笃笑), “No Carbon to Use” (没碳用), " Inadequate for Children" (儿童不宜), “Happy Disaster” (越大镬越快乐) etc.
What’s more, Wang Zi Hua has also played a leading role in the record-breaking rate TV series “War of Genders” (男亲女爱), “To Catch the Uncatchable” (栋笃神探) and “Men Don’t Cry” (奸人坚).
If his shows were only a series of jokes, it didn’t worth watching. But what Wang Zi Hua could do is to bring laughter and reflection to Hong Kong when the city itself was undergoing SARS, economical breakdown, disfunctional governement officials and financial crisis. He shared his feelings and brought us positive messages, through laughter and in our bad times.
Unlike the other stand-up comedians in Hong Kong, he had done something unthinkable: He talked nothing but belief, attitude and principle in living and still made audience laugh for the whole show.
We can’t help asking: why he could do that successfully? Actually, the answer just lies in his miserable experience before his huge success.
After he had obtained his Bachelor Degree in Philosophy in Canada, he returned to Hong Kong. Since his dream was to become an excellent actor, he did everything he can to get the chance of performing: worked for Radio Television Hong Kong as Production Assistant, hosted "Morning Live Studio" of ATV, wrote movie scripts and played insignificant roles in over 30 movies.
Unfortunately, he was still not handsome enough to get a leading role after a few years of hard working. He felt so desperate that he decided to hold a stand-up comedy to express all his misery and then give up his dream forever.
But to everyone’s surprise, he made a huge success. It was exactly what he had suffered that made his stand-up comedy so inspiring and philosophical, full of dark humor, absurdity and irony. And that is why the audience love him so much
Wang Zi Hua’s new stand-up comedy is coming soon. Let’s look forward to what he will bring us this time.
