International Relations
(Diplomatic/Military History ; Strategic Studies;Traditional Security; Sea Power)

Veritas vos liberabit.

Read Much.Think More.Talk Less.

Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtile; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend.Abeunt studia in morse.

Vision is the art of seeing things invisible.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

History explains. Legacy defines. Vision leads.

Fear and suspicion are the best breeders of themselves.

True courage is about knowing not when to take a life but when to spare one.

As determinants of human decisions and actions, myths are sometimes more real forces than objective reality.

The price of experience is conformity.

Theory should be study, not doctrine. The trouble is that many of the minds that must grapple with strategic challenges are uneducable.

The strong can do everything within their power to do so; The weak have to accept everything that they have to accept.

Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.

Individuals vary, but percentages remain constant.

History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.

We can’t use history to avoid the mistakes of the past. What history can provide is a way to make us wiser in our public choices and more richly human in our private lives.

History is not, of course, a cookbook offering pretested recipes. It teaches by analogy, not by maxims. It can illuminate the consequences of actions in comparable situations...each generation must discover for itself what situations are in fact comparable.

The popular, or conventional, wisdom regarding what constitutes "reality" is wrong more often than people care to admit.

I,at least, am not so presumptuous to believe that history can be made by the likes of us. It is my task to observe history's currents and to steer my ship within them. I cannot guide the currents themselves, let alone create them.

What statesmen required was the foresight and judgment that came of accurate imagination or vision based on reality.

In politics, you cannot focus on a long-range plan and proceed blindly in accord with it. All you can do is draw the broad outlines of the directions you seek to follow. This you must keep unswervingly in view, even though you may not know the precise route that will get you there.

Realism ought to persuade us that political controversies are always conflicts between sinners and not between righteous men and sinners. It ought to mitigate the self-righteousness which is an inevitable concomitant of all human conflict.

As soon as men decide that all means are permitted to fight an evil, then their good becomes indistinguishable from the evil that they set out to destroy.

We Germans fear God, but nothing else in the world; and it is the fear of God, which lets us love and foster peace.

Men generally rise to office through their mediocrity and remain there through their superiority. This conjunction of antagonistic elements is the rarest thing, and it is for that reason that there are so few statesmen.

What is "the people"? What is public opinion? It is a point of view which has been reached by 80 or 90 intelligent and influential minds---usually in the face of the ideas of the vast majority----and which they then gradually broadcast until they make it the communis opinio.

Nothing has occurred since 1945 to indicate that war, or the threat of it, could not still be an effective instrument of state policy. Against peoples who were not prepared to defend themselves it might be very effective indeed.

In a world of international anarchy, foreign policy must aim above all at the improvement or at least preservation of the relative power position of the state. Power is in the last instance that ability to wage successful war, and in geography lie the clues to the problems of military and political strategy. The territory of a state is the base from which it operates in time of war and the strategic position which it occupies during the temporary armistice called peace.

Geo-economics is the logic of war in the grammar of commerce.

Every society gets the ruler it deserves.

Taking a momentous step based on hope, and without an effective and feasible countermove at hand in case the opponent fails to do what you expect, amounts to reckless folly.

Strategy is about setting priorities and allocating risk.

Though the object of being a Great Power is to be able to fight a Great War, the only way of remaining a Great Power is not to fight one.

By land we beat them out of the Sea. We obtained so great and so many Victories at land that they were forced to neglect their Sea Affairs, in order to apply their whole strength both in Money and men to defend their country... at land.

To do the same thing as your enemy but on a smaller scale is futile. If you cannot be superior, you must be different.

While amateurs discussed strategy, professionals discussed logistics.

Diplomacy has more to do with managing relations over time than producing singular and monumental deals.

The wonderful thing about fighting an imaginary opponent is that he's always greatly skilled yet easily defeated. The pride of victory without the risk of loss.

The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge. Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!‘

If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.

There is a reason that God gave us two ears and only one mouth.

Men at some time are masters of their fates: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.

Live as brave men; and if fortune is adverse,
front its blows with brave hearts.

May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.
