The HDB does what the families do: it keeps everyone close, and it keeps everyone stuck. The building contains a household’s misery inside a small flat, while the family tries to contain what threatens to spill among its members. Privacy is partial and does not protect you for long; distance is possible, but only emotionally, and only up to a point
