Niranjanananda saraswati:The ego is guieded by and is responsible for asmita, the knowledge that "I" exist, "I am". It is to guard this knowledge of "I am" that the ego manifests. If someone utters a few nasty words to you, your sense of identity is hurt. All the conflicts that take place, whether in context of family, society or the world, are credited to asmita. The yogis say that the final hurdle to cross in the process of self-realiszation is the ego. Therefore in the final stages of spiritual life one needs the guidance and inspiration of guru.The guru channels the ego, changes its direction. This process is called egodectomy. It means that you have to die to be born again.
