In a polarized political environment, it is increasingly dangerous to voice neutral opinions. As the frontiers of social progess are continuously pushed forward, neutral opinions are progressively redefined as heresy.
Nowadays, in academia, one would certainly run into great troubles by saying these common sense things:
"CO2 is not a pollutant." (Why define CO2 as a pollutant, if it is sine qua non for all plants that operate photosynthesis? No, damn you filthy climate sceptic!)
"There are only two genders biologically." (Surely, that is not inclusive and should be condemned as hate speech!)
"Women and men are biologically and psychologically different." (You are a misogynist! Fight the oppressive patriarchy!)
"Science originates in the West."
"Syrian civil war is not caused by climate change."
"Why should a tech company have exactly 50% of female employees, if computer science departments typically have no more than 20% of female students?"
. . . . . .
The list goes on and on. It seems just a matter time that thought police of the left take over the academia.
