    BOOK1
Chapter 1 The boy who live

    [P11-17]
1.As he drove towards town he thought of nothing except a large order of drills he was hoping to get that day.

2.As he sat in the usual morning traffice jam, he couldn't help noticing that there seemed to be a lot of strangely dressed people about.
    在这里,“about”表示“here and there;all around”(到处,处处)的意思。
The children were rushing about.(孩子们到处乱闯。)

    3.The nerve of him!
What a nerve! She just walked off with my radio!(脸皮真厚!
She had the nerve to say I was cheating.(她竟敢说我作弊,太放肆了。)

    4. There was no point in worrying Mrs Dursley, she always got so upset at any mention of her sister.
① no point in doing sth.= 做某事没有意义
eg. There’s no point in doing something if you aren’t going to do it right.

② be upset +by/ about/ at sth, be upset with sb.
p16:He didn't seem at all upset at being almost knocked to the ground.

5.As he pulled into the driveway of number four, the first thing he saw was the tabby cat he'd spotted that morning.
① pull into = when a vehicle or driver pulls into a place, the vehicle moves into the place and stops there. 后停下
eg. He pulled into the driveway in front of her garage.

② spot =vt., If you spot something or someone, you notice them. 发现
Vicky failed to spot the error.

6.Trying to pull himself together, he let himself into the house. He was still determined not to mention anything to his wife.
① to pull oneself together

② be determined to do sth.表示一个状态; 而 determine to do sth.表示一个动作,就像 worry about 和 be worried about 的用法一样.

She determined to go that very afternoon.
He was determined to win the game.

    7. Perhaps people have been celebrating Bonfire Night early - it's not until next week, folks!
    Bonfire Night =

    [P21-23]
1.Mrs Dursley sipped her tea through pursed lips.
    purse = n.钱包,vt.(嘴巴)皱起
If you purse your lips, you move them into a small, rounded shape, usually because you disapprove of something or when you are thinking.
She pursed her lips in disapproval.

2.While Mrs Dursley was in the bathroom, Mr Dursley crept to the bedroom window and peered down into the front garden.
① creep =vi. When people or animals creep somewhere, they move quietly and slowly.
She crept downstairs and opened the front door quite softly.

② peer =vi. If you peer at something, you look at it very hard, usually because it is difficult to see clearly.
She peered at the neighbors from behind the curtain.

3.Well,I just thought..maybe..it was something to do with ..you know.. her lot.
lot = you can refer to a specific group of people as a particular lot. 一群人
eg.This lot were whispering excitedly, too, and he couldn't see a single collecting tin.[P14] collecting tin 募捐箱
Future generations are going to think that we were a pretty boring lot.(后辈们会认为我们是一群无聊的人)

4.It didn't so much as quiver when a car door slammed in the next street, nor when two owls swooped overhead. In fact, it was nearly midnight before the cat moved at all.
    ① not so much as..
He did not so much as thank me.
He doesn't so much as invite his best friends.(他甚至连他最好的朋友都没邀请)

    ② not so much A as B = 与其说A,不如说B;这是一个常用的并列连词,其含义相当于rather than
They weren't so much islands as sandbars.(与其说那是些岛屿,还不如说都是些沙洲)

not so much as与 not so much.as 有何区别:

    ③ not ..so much as..= 不如…
He does not smoke so much as you.

    1. pop out
A man appeared on the corner the cat had been watching, appeared so suddenly and silently you'd have thought he'd just popped out of the ground.

在文中,我们看到的是一个词组pop out of sth,表示“come out suddenly(突然出来)”比如:
His eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw what he had won.(他一看到自己赢得的东西,顿时两眼瞪得大大的。)

    2. buckle v.扣住,n.
Buckled shoes have buckles on them, either to fasten them or as decoration.
He was wearing long robes, a purple cloack which swept the ground and high-heeled, buckled boots.
