Ultrafunk fx:gate DirectX and VST version release 3 Copyright © 1999-2002 Ultrafunk AS http://www.ultrafunk.com All rights reserved. fx:gate is a dynamic gate with side-chain filtering and lookahead. This manual documents the fx:gate controls and parameters. The fx:gate plug-in has wide variety of uses. It can funcion as a noise gate, which quite simply gates (or blocks) signals whose amplitude lies below a certain threshold, and lets other signals through. This is useful for eliminating background noises, such as hiss or hum, during periods of silence in a recording or performance. In addition, it also features a tuneable peak Punch mode that makes it possible to add transient punch to frequencies lacking in individual drum sounds, adding greater definition and presence to the gated signal. Using the variable high pass and low pass side chain filters enables you to perform "frequency conscious" gating. The gate can also be switched from Gating to Ducking mode for removal of clicks and pops. Note: Because of limitations in both the DirectX and VST plug-in architectures, it is not possible to create audio or control signal busses between plug-ins in any standard way. This limitation makes it difficult to implement a standard gate sidechain input that can accept an "external" trigger signal. It is possible to create a "hack" that allows signals to flow between our own plug-ins, but we feel that it just is not the proper way to do things. The sidechain functionality in the fx:gate plug-in allows you to use high- and lowpass filters on the incoming audio to create a "sidechain trigger signal". fx:gate interface Plug-in toolbar and about bar The plug-in Toolbar at the top of the user interface and the About bar at the bottom are common features for all plug-ins. Please read the Toolbar and About bar topic for more information. It also describes how to register plug-ins to enable full functionality when you have received a registration key from Ultrafunk after you have purchased one or more plug-ins. Plug-in controls and parameters Threshold and Input meter Controls: Edit and slider, input meter Sets the level below which gating starts to take place. For normal noise removal applications, it is usual to set the Threshold as low as is possible without spurious triggering occurring, so that none of the desired signal is lost. Use the Input meter as a guide to set an appropriate value. When mode is set to Duck the gate is reversed and will pass signals that are below the threshold instead of above it. Range: -60 dB to 0 dB Depth Controls: Edit and slider Sets the amount of attenuation applied to the input signal when the gate is closed. This enables the gate to be used to remove unwanted signals entirely, or simply to attenuate signals that are below the threshold level (or above threshold when set to Duck mode). Range: -Inf., -40 dB to 0 dB Low cut Controls: Edit and slider The Low cut filter works by attenuating frequencies below the cut-off frequency selected. It does not affect the audio passing through the gate, only the sidechain signal that is used to trigger it. Range: Off., 20 Hz to 20.000 Hz High cut Controls: Edit and slider This High Frequency filter attenuates frequencies above the selected cut-off value. In other words, when both filters are set, it is the range between the two settings that is allowed to pass. It does not affect the audio passing through the gate, only the sidechain signal that is used to trigger it. Range: 20 Hz to 20.000 Hz, Off. Gate status LEDs Three LEDs show the status of the gate: When the gate is closed, the red LED is illuminated; when the gate is open the green LED comes on and the red one goes off. When the input signal falls below the threshold, the green LED will extinguish and the amber LED will light up over the duration of the hold and release time. Gate envelope display Normal/Duck gate mode This toggle button sets the gate mode; Normal or Duck. The current mode will be reflected in the gate envelope display. States: Normal or Duck Punch mode Controls: Punch mode cycle button, Level edit and Tune edit This cycle button is used to set the gate's punch mode. Punch mode states: Off, Wide and Tuned Level range: 0 dB to 20 dB Tune range: 20 Hz to 16.000 Hz Punch adds gain to the leading edge of the envelope for a short duration. This adds considerable power to the gated signal. A filter option allows the user to tune the punch to a selected frequency for more subtle effects. Off - punch has no effect Wide - wideband signal is used to create the punch Tuned - punch signal is bandpassed (controlled by the tune parameter) Level sets the punch level. Disabled when set to 0 dB. Tune sets the center frequency of the bandpass filter. Attack Controls: Edit and slider This control determines how quickly the gate opens. The fastest Attack time ensures that the gate does not clip the leading edge of extremely fast transients, but using fast attack times can sometimes cause audible clicks. To get around this problem, use a slower attack time and increase the lookahead parameter to make the gate open before the transient parts of the waveform. Range: 0.0 ms to 999.9 ms Hold Controls: Edit and slider Determines the amount of time the gate is held open after the signal falls below the Threshold. This helps to prevent spurious re-triggering when using fast Release times, but is also instrumental in creating the classic gated reverb sound which is often applied to drums. Range: 0 ms to 2500 ms Release Controls: Edit and slider Determines the rate at which the gate closes, once the signal has fallen below the Threshold and the Hold time has expired. Range: 5 ms to 4000 ms Lookahead Controls: Edit and slider Increasing the lookahead delays the audio passing through the gate, but not the sidechain signal used to trigger it. This way you can make the gate open before the transients parts of the waveform triggers the gate, enabling you to use a longer attack time without losing the attack part of the transient. Range: 0.0 ms to 40.0 ms Gain Controls: Edit and slider Lets you adjust the output level to avoid clipping, or to create balance between the original and the processed sound. Range: -30.0 dB to 0.0 dB Output listen toggle This button toggles the plug-in's audio output. You can choose to listen to the Audio output, which is the input signal processed through the gate, or you can listen to the sidechain filter output. States: Audio or Sidech. (Sidechain) Output meter The Output meter displays the post-gate signal level. Range: -60 dB to 0 dB

Controls All plug-ins share the same standard user interface elements and functionality, their behaviour is explained below. In a few cases there will be "non-standard" user interface elements present in a plug-in, when this is the case their behaviour will be explained in the Plug-in controls and parameters section. Toggle buttons Toggle buttons are used for toggling elements between on and off states, or toggling between two or more exclusive buttons. If the element is on, the toggle button is yellow, otherwise it is rendered a dull gray. On/off state: Exclusive toggle buttons are used when a parameter can have only one value. Clicking on an exclusive toggle button activates it and disables all others in that group. Exclusive: Cycle buttons Cycle buttons are used for cycling through the possible values an element can have. The value is changed each time you click the button, indicated by a different text or image being displayed. Most cycle buttons will bear an identifying symbol in the shape of a twirling arrow. Cycle and drop down menu buttons The cycle button part of this control is used for cycling through the possible values an element can have. The value is changed each time you click the button, indicated by a different text or image being displayed. Cycle: In addition to the cycle function, this control also has a drop down menu indicated by a drop down button with a downward arrow located at the right side of the control. Clicking on this button will bring up the drop down menu that will display all possible values an element can have. The currently selected element is checked as a 'radio button menu item'. Clicking on any item displayed in the menu will make it the current selection which will also be reflected by the cycle button. Menu: Edit controls Edit controls are used for entering text from the keyboard, such as entering a numeric value for a parameter. To use the keyboard for entering or editing text in an edit control, you either have to double click inside the edit control using the mouse, or you can press space to enter the keyboard edit mode when an edit control is active. Press Enter to use the changed value, or press Escape or click the mouse outside of the edit control to revert back to the previous value. Keyboard input/edit: Sonitus:fx: plug-ins feature an extended edit control that allows you to quickly change the current value using the mouse. To give an edit control focus, click and hold the left mouse button. A red border will appear, indicating that the control is active for editing. While holding the left mouse button, move the mouse up or right to increase a value, and down or left to decrease a value. Some edit controls respond to accelleration, i.e. they will update their values in large steps if the mouse is moved rapidly or in smaller steps allowing for detail setting when moved slowly. Edit controls support using a mousewheel for incrementing and decrementing values. Mouse/keyboard: Sliders Sliders are used for setting values using the mouse. By first clicking on the slider knob, or anywhere on the slider knob track, and then by moving the mouse back and forth horizontally or up and down vertically (depending on the slider's orientation), you can change the slider's associated parameter value. Some sliders also respond to acceleration, i.e. they will update their values in large steps if the mouse is moved rapidly or in smaller steps allowing for detail setting when moved slowly. Double-click on a slider to set the default value for the associated parameter. The tickmarks under each slider indicates the minimum, maximum and zero value for the associated parameter, as well as steps in between. Sliders support using a mousewheel for incrementing and decrementing values. Horizontal slider: Vertical sliders: Peak meter and peak indicators This control consists of three display elements. The left and right (L+R) peak meters and dB scale, L+R peak LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and the L+R peak dB text readout. Peak meters are usually placed at the input and/or ouput stage of the audio signal chain in the plug-in, but in some cases they are used for indicating and/or adjusting other values. The L+R peak meters will continually display audio signal levels as well as peak history related to the displayed scale ranging from 0dB peak to -nndB. The peak meters will fall to -Inf. when a plug-in is in bypass mode or no audio signal is present. If the audio is not clipping the peak LEDs are black. When a clip occurs on a channel the LED will glow bright red for an instant then go back to dark red to show that clipping has taken place. Click on either peak indicator to reset both. The L+R peak dB text readout will continually display and hold peak audio signal levels from -Inf. to levels above digital 0dB (clipping). Clicking on either peak dB text readout will reset both to -Inf. Meter states:
