杜秋锐出生于北京,本科毕业于Parsons School of Design(帕森斯设计艺术学院)插画系,研究生毕业于Pratt Institute(普瑞特艺术学院)纯艺术绘画系,同时作为E.E Art Group的发起人,致力为青年艺术家策展发声。现工作生活于上海、北京、纽约。
杜秋锐很注重作品的叙事性,他用自己独特的视角观察生活,并把周遭生活中所带有的喧嚣,奇特的气质带入到他的作品中。他将他的情感融入到鲜艳、五彩斑斓的颜色和夸张、嘲讽的表现形式里,并以他丰富的想象力去创造一个个形态各异、神色飞扬、怪诞奇趣的人物形象与故事情节。同时,在喧闹欢乐中述说了转瞬即逝的怀疑与黯然,精准的表情与人物设置恰恰放大了他对情感的描绘,使荒诞感更加强烈和复杂,他的作品营造了超现实主义的氛围和多重的张力,使平凡的日常事物都发生了变化。他的作品画面丰富、明快、时尚感强烈,却映射出当代高度发达的商业文明社会中,人们冷漠、空虚、疏离的情感。他的作品是波普主义的浮世绘,记录的是艺术家个人的情感与记忆,但又分明刻画着你我的生活。
正如秋锐所说,在这个世界中,每一个人都是主角,每一处角落都有一场戏剧在上演。他作品中或千变万化或千篇一律的角色指向并不太重要,他们的普遍性能够直达我们认知的某一处场景,这种直观的信息传递将个体经验的多元和碎片化重组,足以激发共鸣。展览名中“珍珠泪”是我们自认为的生活精彩或珍贵瞬间,也是我们用各种方式留下、记录下的对现实生活被动的顺应与妥协,又或是对某个高光时刻的自嘲,而最终,也许都将成为我们或微笑面对或笑中带泪的骄傲与倔强。
Qiurui Du was born in Beijing, China. B.F.A graduated from Dept. Illustration of Parsons School of Design in New York in 2018. M.F.A graduated from Dept. Painting and Drawing of Pratt Institute in New York in 2019. He is currently based in Shanghai, Beijing and New York City.
Qiurui Du cares about the narrative of his works. He observes life with his unique perspective and brings the hustle and bustle and peculiar temperament of surrounding life into his works. His feelings and emotions are integrated into the vibrant, rich colors and exaggerated, sarcastic forms of expression. Characters with various looks and shapes, and intriguing, quirky stories spring from his wild imagination. Meanwhile, there are ephemeral doubt and bleakness narrated in the delightful clamour. The precise grip of facial expressions and character design properly zoom in his description of emotions, which intensifies and complicates the absurdity. His works create a surrealist atmosphere and multiple tensions, leading to changes of ordinary daily things. The pictures are rich, bright and have a strong sense of fashion, yet reflect the feelings of indifference, emptiness, and alienation among people in the contemporary highly developed commercial civilization. They are a pop-ism ukiyo-e, which clearly portrays the life of us, while recording the artist’s personal emotions and memories.
Just as Qiurui said, in this world, everyone is the protagonist, and there is a drama on the go in every corner. It doesn’t matter whether the character orientation in his works is ever-changing or uniform. Their universality can directly reach a certain scene we recognize and this kind of intuitive information transmission reorganizes the diversity and fragmentation of individual experiences, which is enough to stimulate resonance. We may all be accustomed to the hubbub of the city, the neon flashing in the night, and the ordinary and messy daily life. The ‘pearl droppings’ in the title of the exhibition indicates, in our minds, the wonderful or precious moments in life, which could also be the passive compliance and compromise with real life or the self-deprecating at a certain highlight moment that we keep and record in various ways. And in the end, they may all become our pride or perseverance of bitter sweetness or sweet bitterness.
