On Tuesday March 5th, Public Diplomacy Assistant Omair M. Mirza will launch a monthly series in the Shanghai American Center, Contemporary Topics in U.S. Government. Join us as Omair introduces the American values of liberty, equality, and justice, and discusses how—and to what extent—colonial American experiences reflected these values. Understanding America today requires a consideration of some important historical events and processes, including: 14th and 15th century Europe and the lives of everyday people; what factors prompted some Europeans to immigrate to (what would become) the United States of America; relations and tensions between Britain and American colonies; the American Revolution; and the Declaration of Independence. The history and roots of the American experiment--though marked by uneven progress, seismic struggles, and violent conflicts—continue to bear fruit and propel forward an America that welcomes immigrants, strives for equality and inclusion, and a just and equitable society. Previously, Omair worked for several years on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC as a Legislative Assistant to a U.S. Congressman.
