“...Vallon’s playing and pieces are tonally dense and rhythmically adept. They have something magic that holds the listener captive...”
- Reiner Kobe, Jazzpodium
Colin Vallon (born 1980) is a Swiss jazz pianist. In 1998 he attended the Swiss Jazz School. Where most other jazz pianists are already at wit’s end, Colin Vallon really just begins. In a breath-taking manner and with a maximum of verve and chutzpah, he reconciles a sense of form with a passion for experiment – he doesn’t only juggle with melodies and harmonies, but rather he also integrates a multitude of prepared sounds in his playing.
Colin Vallon has been leading his own trios since 1999. In 2005 he forms a new trio with bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Samuel Rohrer. The third trio album Rruga was released in 2011 on the prestigious international label ECM Records. Rohrer was replaced by drummer Julian Sartorius in 2012. The fourth album Le Vent(2014) and the fifth album Danse(2017) was also released on the ECM label. The trio has been very active on the international jazz scene. Numerous concerts at international festivals (Wilisau, Paris, Vienne, Rome, London, Portland, Montreal…) and tours in Europe, Canada, U.S.A., Japan, South Korea …
Colin Vallon won the Fridl-Wald Foundation Prize, 1st Prize in the Competition Nescafé Let’s Jazz Together, and 3rd Prize in the Montreux International Jazz Piano Solo Competition. In 2004 Pro Helvetia commissioned a composition by him and he founded a new quintet, “Colin Vallon cinq” with French trumpet player Erik Truffaz.In2008 he won the Nico Kaufmann Foudation prize and in 2009 the SUISA foundation prize. 2009 the Colin Vallon trio won the Pro Helvetia high priority jazz promotion. He is nominated for the 2016 Swiss Music Prize and in 2017 he receives the“Prix de la Relève du Canton de Vaud”.
