5 Songs to Get You Into Bombino!
The music of Bombino is seductive. He’ll start it off with a single, slippery guitar line. Shimmers under the desert sun. And then it’ll build. The fuzzed-out guitars heighten, a coiled bassline unspools, slithering along the sands. A parched voice speaks of love, and loss, and memory. You’ll dance. You’ll sway. Maybe close your eyes. That’s when the gateway opens. Bombino’s music channels over 5,000 years of Saharan history – the songs of his ancestors speaking through his six-strings. To call it ‘timeless’ is an understatement: this is beyond time. Who else could bring reggae, or the indie garage crunch of a band like The Black Keys, into a thousand-year old folk rhythm about the Tuareg community? The magic of Bombino’s music is that none of this needs to matter. Because, holy wow, this man can SHRED. Bombino’s a TRIP.
Five-city tour. Details below. Here’s five songs to get you acquainted.
Bombino tackles the oldest of themes: love, and brings the vastness of the desert to bear on his affections. Beautiful.
A bouncy, lovely concoction of reggae tones and rhythms blended with the Tuareg blues. Cooking in the scorching desert sun, then cooling off with a tropical sea breeze.
You don't need a strong grasp of the Tamasheq language to notice that this is also a title of an album by Sahara legends Tinariwen. This underlines the commonality of heritage and purpose between the kid (Bombino) and his better-known elders: a passing of the torch.
