Doug (Ian Slade) and Kayleen (Kate Meyers) first met when they were eight years old. It was just a regular day at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic School. Kayleen was laying in the nurse’s office on account of her chronic stomach pains. Meanwhile, Doug comes in with a bandage over his face after having broken his face by riding his bicycle off the roof of the school. This encounter launches a life-long friendship spanning 30 years. Doug’s many injuries leave some seriously debilitating scars, and Kayleen’s troubled and turbulent life leave some lasting scars of her own.
Gruesome Playground Injuries by Rajiv Joseph is the story of two misfits. Their lives intertwine as they fall in and out of love, and we, the observers, catch glimpses of their pain and pleasure, happiness and sorrow, and everything in between.
