Italy showed its active power in art in the 20th century. The Italian artists were continuously seeking a unique art style among their rich history and culture, their tradition since the Renaissance and the international tide of the contemporary art. Many important genres of art appeared in Italy and played significant roles in the world art history。
Giorgio de Chirico, Renato Guttuso, Giacomo Manzu and Pietro Annigoni, these famous names are an indispensable part in the art history of the 20th century. As an important representative of the Metaphysical art, Chirico built an absurd and fantastic world in his paintings which conveyed a kind of philosophy of extreme tranquillity and mystery. He was considered as the pioneer of surrealism. Renato Guttuso, member of Italian modern realism, is undoubtedly regarded as a realist because of his deep attention to society and reality. It is not possible to define which genre Guttuso belongs to because of the changeable form in his paintings in which the strong colour and the unyielding brush strokes were properly arranged in an orderly structure. Giacomo Manzu, a distinctive sculptor and painter whose art works were close to humanity, treated God, in religious themes, as a common person and endowed his works with warm and tactile vitality. Pietro Annigoni dedicated himself to study the Renaissance without being tempted by new trends and passionately finished paintings and frescos in his studio as well as in the church. He remained an example of classicism in art.
