Beijing's Premier Grateful Dead Cover Band
What do you get when you mix a Texas Cowboy Drummer, a funk bassist, a guitarist obsessed with textures and a veteran of the US Army Rock Band? The Beijing Dead.
We take the music of American Psychedelic Cowboy Jazzers the Grateful Dead as our starting point and go somewhere (hopefully).
Expect to dance, yodel, sing along and get surprisingly funky. Get your dose with the Beijing Dead.
Guest: Peter Murchison
Peter Murchison first saw the Grateful Dead twice in the spring of 1971. That tour had the New Riders with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel opening for the Dead. Peter regularly snuck backstage at early shows and chatted as any idiotic adoring fan to Garcia, Lesh, other band members and roadies. In 1973, he was at 2 of the 3 nights that the “Garcia Saunders Live At The Keystone” album was recorded. He didn’t actually jam with Garcia, but one afternoon in ’73, he was in the same small San Francisco guitar shop where Garcia was trying out a gold-trimmed Gibson banjo, while Peter played chords 15 feet away. Does that count? Peter also accompanied beat poet Alan Ginsburg and that was a real show, no lie! Ask to see the picture!
