作者: Nick Lane
出版社: Oxford University Press
出版年: 2003-9-25
评语:Nick Lane's first popular science book covers a variety of subjects: oxygen, free radicals, antioxidants, sex, ageing, and at great length anti-ageing science, and holds some big and fascinating ideas (some of which speculative). Heavy on chemistry at times. Not an easy read but worth all the effort. P.S. It's best to read Nick Lane's four books in chronological order, which is "Oxygen" => "Sex, Power and Mitochondria" => "Life Ascending" => "The Vital Question".

作者: Svante Pääbo
出版社: Basic Books
出版年: 2014-2
评语:I've always been fascinated by Neanderthals and other archaic hominins. More recently, I developed an interest in genetics. So, what could possibly be better than a book that is the combination of the two – Palaeoanthropological Genetics – written by the very founder of this field? Turns out this book is more about the author's own scientific enquiry than the subject itself, which doesn't make it any less exciting. As Edward O.Wilson reviewed: “It is a rare thing to read about an important development in science by its principal innovator, written in the spirit and style in which the research unfolded. Neanderthal Man is a dispatch from the front, and if you want to learn how real science is really done, I suggest you read it.” P.S. Yes! We had sex with the Neanderthals.

作者: Mark Forsyth
出版社: Icon Books Ltd
出版年: 2013-11-7
评语:Rhetoric is considered by many as frivolous. True, it could be deceptive, but it is not without its uses. This is by far the best and the most entertaining book on this subject. Eloquent, but only light-heartedly so, which sets this book apart: free of pedantry. A good read for whom have an eye for the art of language, or simply want to laugh out loud. It will also help, if you want to improve or impress with your English.

作者: Gary L. Hardcastle / George A. Reisch
出版社: Open Court
出版年: 2006-03-30
评语:A collection of critiques on Monty Python's works written by a bunch of (in Terry Gilliam's voice) profs from uni. Highly intellectual. I liked most of them but failed to understand some pieces owing to lack of philosophical sophistication. This is the ultimate book for Python nerds. Everything I learnt about philosophy I learnt from Monty Python. Bye, Bruce.

作者: Richard Dawkins

评语:Richard Dawkins at his best. A book that is worth re-reading. (I still admire his activism for atheism but he is admittedly more adorable as a scientist.)

作者: Matt Ridley
出版社: HarperCollins
出版年: 2003-05-01
评语:I don't agree with Ridley on all political issues, but I enjoyed his writing. Several of his books are very well written, especially this one and the classic "The Red Queen". (The latter is too reductionist for my taste. Science is about reductionism, but the study of human nature and sexes is complicated hence should be treated with more delicacy.) Don't think I'll read Steven Pinker's "The Blank Slate" after this book seeing it's similar and I found Pinker's style a bit dry to my taste.

作者: Nessa Carey
出版社: Icon Books Ltd
出版年: 2011-9-1
评语:I call this book "the most informative book of the year". It taught me A LOT on a previously poorly understood subject (by me). Bonus credit for its enjoyableness and the author's humour (although the biomedical part was dense for an amateur like me). I have high expectations for Nessa Carey's forthcoming book "The Junk DNA".

作者: Nick Lane
出版社: Oxford University Press
出版年: 2006-12-11
评语:Impressive. More technical than "Life Ascending". An eye opener nonetheless. In my pursuit of trying to understand biology as an amateur, I've ventured too much into the information land (the genes, the DNA and whatnot) and somehow "forgot" the more fundamental and obvious physical/chemical aspect of the thing. Nick Lane, a biochemist, offered an interesting and refreshing view and reminded me that biology is, first of all, chemistry.

评语:The second Nick Lane book I listed here. Five stars. At times it can be overly technical, which is not a criticism as we need more hardcore popular science book like this one.
