作者: Iain M. Banks
出版社: Orbit
出版年: 2008-3-26
评语:【第一期第1本】(3/5) "A lot of things happen in between, but if you write a summary of the plot it can be extremely short. But it is a space opera in the sense that a lot of cool stuff happens... but it was fun to be a part of the journey, and that's what I enjoyed about it. It's very clear while reading this that he loves describing what the space civilization is, what their morals are, what their ideas are. And he spends a lot of time on this, and personally I found it a bit boring after a while... But it wraps up nicely in the end, and it's overall just a fun space adventure. I would rate this 3 out of 5 stars. It was alright, it was okay."

评语:【第一期第2本】(5/5) "It's very funny, I'm not even sure it's supposed to be funny, but I laughed loud a lot of times while reading it. But then the story turns very grim and you understand that this is not a way to live, this is actually a horror scenario. And the ending left, just like 1984, a very big impact on me. I think about this book a lot after reading it. I love this book; I think it's a masterpiece. 5 out of 5. It's an incredible piece of literature I could not recommend this enough. If you like a dystopian future, but then again you've probably read it already anyway."

作者: Ray Bradbury
出版社: Simon & Schuster
出版年: 2013-6-10
评语:【第一期第3本】(2/5) Obviously, that (burning books) is an important message, but I just found it to be told in a very shallow and uninteresting manner. The meaning was the story, and not the story itself, which I found to be kind of annoying.... I compared his writing style to Huxley, and it's a joke. I felt like, since it didn't really have a story, I'm just reading Ray Bradbury's ideas and his fears directly and it just came across as kind of petty and anti- innovation.... He seems like the kind of person that will tell you don't spend too much time in the front of the TV because your eyes will become squared, and to me that just seemed like against innovation. In the future, yes, he was probably right about how quickly we want to consume media, but people still read books. Just because we have computers and television and radio that doesn't turn us off from anything.... Because of that I can't give this book too high of a rating, I will give it a 2 out of 5. I don't really understand its price and I would not recommend this book. I would much rather recommend a book like Brave New World or 1984.

出版社: Penguin Classics
出版年: 2003-2-4
评语:【第一期第4本】(4/5) "So I asked Marzia what her favorite book was, it's “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, another fine piece of literature and I understand exactly why Marzia loved this book; it has a meaningful story with sort of horror elements to it.... It's a very interesting story about vanity, about how one mistake can lead your whole life astray, and it's extremely well written. I really, really really enjoyed this book, I thought it was fantastic and I totally understand why it's Marzia's favorite book. I would rate this four out of five."

评语:【第一期第5本】(?/5) "I think this was more what I was looking for when I wanted to read sci-fi; I think this is what I wanted to read. This tackles some really interesting topics like AI, time, human evolution, speciesism or how we value other species. It was very interesting.... It really made me look differently on how we value species and on humanity in the future. But overall it was just a fun space adventure. I really enjoyed it, I thought it was fun from the beginning to the end."

出版年: 2018-1-23
评语:【第一期第6本】(?/5) "I don't think I ever would have read a self-help book. It gave me a lot of new perspectives that I never thought I would even have; it was very interesting. Even reading about advice that doesn't resonate with me at all, but just to understand other people. Jordan goes very deep in philosophical thinking and psychological thinking, and he makes very simple claims.... And finding out that he’s religious… It's probably unfair for me to say, but anytime I see self-help I'm like: “this is just some sort of cult following”. It's not. It's not at all, but it made me look more critically at the rules. "

评语:【第二期第1本】(5/5) " I think this is a great book if you haven't read anything in a while and don't really know what to get into. It's very light and it's very gripping from the beginning to the end.... You may be familiar with “I Am Legend” because of the film with Will Smith, and he does follow it pretty similarly. But in the film, they're zombies. They are these weird zombie things. But it's like, they’re vampires. That's the point of the book, you can't just change that and completely miss the whole whole idea. And the ending of of this book, which I won't spoil of course, but I will tell you it was one that gave me chills, it really hit me hard. It's a very clever and interesting ending that really stuck with me and I loved it for it. "

出版社: ACE Charter; 25th Anniv edition
出版年: 1996
评语:【第二期第2本】(4/5) "So the book takes a long time to really pick up speed in my opinion, but once it does, it's an amazing journey that I loved taking part of. Unfortunately, there are so many names and so many concepts and so many characters that I got really lost the first few hundred pages. I think that's why people love this book so much, because it's so incredibly rich.... It takes place in the desert. It's about harvesting the most important element in the universe controlled by the rich. It has a bunch of Arabic references. Are you talking about oil perhaps, Frank Herbert? I think this book can definitely be interpreted in different ways, even though it's really just a badass space adventure. I’m giving it four out of five stars."

作者: Haruki Murakami
出版社: Vintage
出版年: 2006-1-3
评语:【第二期第3本】(4/5,但不推荐) "Kafka on the Shore is the story about a self-fulfilling prophecy.... You have a character running away, and then you have a character looking for something in it. And one at the beginning of his life and one at the end of his life. You sort of see their stories come together, but the old man can talk to cats somehow. It's a very, very surreal story. It almost feels like a dream at times when you follow it. It is very honest and open about the fact that it’s the story of the ancient Greek mythology of Oedipus retold in a way almost.... It's filled with metaphors and it's categorized as surrealism, which I can definitely agree with. Because of that I don't think this book is necessarily for everyone. I think with Murakami's storytelling it seems that the feeling and the mood is more important than the story. And he spends a lot of time explaining and describing things that might seem trivial and that might be a bit tedious if you're not really on board."

作者: Bret Easton Ellis
出版社: Pan MacMillan
出版年: 1991-03-31
评语:【第二期第4本】(4/5) "I really thought about that a lot, how I think we've all been in the situation where, for example, you're in a line and you're in a hurry, you immediately start thinking of everyone else as a nuisance. They're in the way of you reaching your goal. Since Patrick sees himself as such a perfect person, as such an elitist being, he really sees everyone else as a shallow person. They don't even compare to him. And I think that's what becomes his demon; because he puts himself in such high regard, everyone else becomes completely insignificant and that becomes his pain, he wants other people to feel that pain. And it goes extremely dark and extremely graphic with its violence and gore to me.... It's a great piece of satire and I really loved it. Four out of five. I recommend it if you want to read a comedy."

作者: Max Tegmark
出版社: Knopf
出版年: 2017-8-29
评语:【第二期第5本】(5? 4.5?/5) "Max really describes the problem that media has really twisted the idea of what we think AI is with movies and such. he's explaining that that's not how AI is going to be at all. And he goes through every single aspect of how, if we invent AI that is smarter than a human what sort of consequences that is going to bring. AI can obviously bring us a lot of positive and good things, but there's a lot of unanswered questions that we haven't dealt with yet, and some questions that are very tough. But just because they're tough doesn't mean we shouldn't think about them.... Basically, Max talks about way before we even existed in microorganisms and the very first set of life and then going literally billions of years into the future and even to the end of the universe. And these were the chapters that I loved. The ending chapters are so fascinating."

作者: Friedrich Nietzsche
出版社: Penguin Classics
出版年: 2003-4-29
评语:【第二期第6本】(?/5) "Nietzsche points out that, in that sense, we're all artists and we're all inventors because our knowledge is actually our own make-belief, which I thought was so true while trying to interpret this book, because the things that I actually really picked up on where the things that I could associate with things I already I already knew, which is very interesting.... He talks about how we're atheists, but we're still religious. And he points out how we we don't really look at God as father figure anymore and we sort of replaced our religion with science, which is oh my very true.... I find myself after reading this trying to question myself more and what the motive behind my intentions are, and it's been a really fun mental exercise for me to try and do, actually. So I'm really glad, despite this being clearly above my reading comprehension, I'm really glad I still gave it a try and I didn't run away scared of it."

评语:【第三期第1本】(3?/5) "It's a very short book, it’s very simple to read. It’s the pinnacle of a minimalistic approach to writing." "I don't know if I really think there's that much to analyze, personally, but I'm sure there is. I'm just not that interested, to be honest. I didn't find it that interesting, especially after reading Moby Dick as well. There is a theme about masculinity... I talked about this book briefly with my mom and she said she actually really, really didn't like it, and I wonder if it is because of the whole masculinity involved with it. I enjoyed it, it was alright, but the more I think about it, the less I enjoy it to be honest. "

作者: Herman Melville
出版社: Penguin Classics
出版年: 2003-2-21
评语:【第三期第2本】(4?/5) "The book changes style of writing, you could say, a lot. It goes from narrative, to straight-up facts about whales, for example, to poetry, to philosophy." "Literally inside Moby Dick there is “The Book of Whales”, which is very different from this minimalist book, “The Old Man and the Sea”. You have a book with books inside it, and if you are not interested in whales I definitely don't recommend reading this book, it basically covers every single aspect of whaling. Let me tell you about the economy, and the ecology, and the anatomy, and the philosophy, and the poetry, and the the weight, and the scale, and the whales of whales and the whales of… Everything there is about whales is basically covered in this book." "Herman really tries to deliver something real, he just doesn't just give us the tip of the iceberg, he gives us the whole thing and there's something honorable in that that you can really appreciate. And I think Moby Dick, while I'm probably not really ready for it yet, I'm really glad I read it. I look forward to reading it again at some point in the future."

作者: Viktor E. Frankl
出版社: Beacon Press
出版年: 2006-6-1
评语:【第三期第3本】(4-5?/5) "I am so glad that I picked this book. I think this book is incredibly important. " "What’s so special about this book is that Frankl is an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor and he's a psychiatrist, so he can then answer the question of what went through the minds of people that survived these concentration camps. " "He discusses a lot, for example, the quote from Nietzsche: “He, who has a ‘why’ to live can bear almost any ‘how’”, and Viktor really puts this to the test. Because put it this way, the whole phrase “what's the meaning of life” is asked to death, but Viktor Frankl actually does a really great job at trying to answer that question and I couldn't help but agree with a lot of it. " "And especially, maybe I'm over-generalizing here, but I feel like a lot of Millennials are struggling to find meaning. I certainly feel better equipped, I know that sounds a bit weird to say, but in case something really bad happens. I feel like, from reading this book, I am better equipped to know how to handle it."

出版年: 2004-10-1
评语:【第三期第5本】(4?/5) "Franz Kafka explicitly didn't want the cockroach to be on the cover because once you read the book you really understand that it's not about the cockroach. " "It's really just a story about isolation and not feeling wanted and feeling like you're a problem. It's such an awful feeling and anyone that's felt like that can sympathize with Gregor in feeling like an actual cockroach. And that's at least why I think he chose a cockroach while writing this." "It's a very sad story and I can't help but sympathize with Gregor, and reading about Franz Kafka's life as well afterwards I sort of understand more and more that this is a very personal story. He had issues with his father, Franz Kafka burned 90% of his work as well, he didn't even want anyone to read it." "Read it, it's good."

You have Ryuji, who's the pinnacle of manliness, he represents honor and I think old Japan, the wife that that represents the post-war culture, and then you have Noboru that wants to gate keep and protect the culture. Because there was a giant cultural shift after World War II and that's a big theme for Yukio Mishima’s work, which I learned afterwards."

The book is called “Bushido: The Soul of Japan” for a reason because the code of ethics of the samurai has left such a huge impact on Japanese society and culture even still today. The explanation of why politeness is so important in Japanese culture, and the logic behind the politeness as well, was really interesting to know about. This is a great book if you want to learn about self-control, control over self-impulses."

"I really enjoyed it at the first half, but the second half was just unnecessary. I think it tried too hard to be commercialized, the story takes on almost like a movie-like plot." "After a while I'm like “this is just ridiculous”. At the end of it, it sort of made me question the skill of the author and if the concept of the dice was even that great to begin with. It just seems like some sort of pseudo-psychiatry and, who knows, maybe that's what it was trying to mock anyway."

You just want to pet Stoner on the back and say: “It's okay, you did your best, man”." "Stoner does it with such grace, and the way he endures it all, you just can't help but look up to him and his character. In a lot of ways, he's a hero and I think that's how the author described him, as an angel in the end. It’s a fantastic read, I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I think this was the novel that I find the easiest to read and flow through, so way if it sounded interesting, give it a go."

"The bit that I especially enjoyed was the last third of the book. Raskolnikov wants to confess to his love, Sonya... And I really enjoyed this bit. I don't know, it's just it's so interesting following these thoughts and the change in Raskolnikov." "Personally, I was extremely bored with the family conflict that was going on throughout this book, it didn't interest me at all.
