SIEGEL (Springfield, MA) A glance at the dress Jessica Spinella aka Jessy J is almost wearing on the inner sleeve of her new CD Tequila Moon speaks volumes about what her record company is shooting for. I have no problem with capitalizing on your looks and charms, but make sure the music you make is as groovy as you seem to be! Luckily, more often that not, Tequila Moon has the goods musically. While the nods to Brazilian music, "Mas Que Nada" and "Besame Mucho", are held back by only average vocals, the Latin tinged instrumentals are quite enjoyable. The influence of producer-guitarist Paul Brown is apparent here, through his performance, production sound and the contribution of five songs he co-wrote. Keyboardist Gregg Karukas shines on "Spanish Nights" and the title track, while Jessy herself proves more than adequate on tenor sax. The cover of Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man" fails to capture the bittersweet soul of the song, but a reggae tinged version of Leon Russell's "A Song for You" is a successful conclusion to the album. Click here to listen to Jessy J on tenor sax lead Donald Hayes on bass, keys, and drum programming, Ricky Peterson on piano and strings, Richie Gajate Garcia on percussion and Paul Brown on guitar in a rousing version of Hayes' "Spanish Nights".
