Their cross over creates a new space for a dynamic and radical inquisitive reflection, a space to defy the future.
A group of people is in a boat travelling along Mekong River that stretches along the Thai-Laos border. They are running against the wind, anticipating a farewell. In the middle of the river, the lady head of the family casts the ashes off into the stream. (Luminous People)
After several years spent sailing in the magnificent but polluted Guanabara Bay, Germano and his crew decide to fish in other waters. Despite their small boat and old motor, they set sail for the high seas. (Germano)
Set in the basement of an apartment building, the day to day life of a security guard is punctuated by the narrative of his journey from the mountains of Nepal, to the Deccan Plateau of Bangalore city, India. (One Way)
The modern China. On a bright sunny day, in a building site, an industrial complex is being deconstructed. The night falls. The ruins of the factory are empty and silent. The phantoms appeared, voices heard, telling their stories... (Brutality Factory)
Tarrafal: territory on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde where, in 1936, Portugal created a concentration camp for political prisoners. This colony was known as the "camp of slow death". (Tarrafal)
An extraordinary line-up of international directors - including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Chantal Akerman and Pedro Costa - contribute to this ambitious and layered omnibus project, funded by Portugal's Gulbenkian Foundation in celebration of its 50th anniversary, and co-produced by Noémie Mendelle of the Scottish Documentary Insititute. Six visually and tonally diverse portraits of changing communities, displaced people and shifting cityscapes emphasise not only the range of lifestyles and environments across the planet, but also the sheer spectrum of expressive tools that cinema can offer. From Weerasethakul's mesmerizing, dreamy opener, to Wang Bing's punishing account of torture in China and Costa's wonderful web of ancestral myth, this is a lush, thought-provoking package.
