It is a story that one might have to be middle aged to appreciate -- a woman and a man whose attraction and eventual deep love survives and deepens, despite years apart and separate lives.
Vincent D'Onofrio does a wonderful job portraying the Scottish fisherman Gavin whose love for George, the French intellectual, is strong and undying. Scacchi seems a tad miscast -- too womanly and sophisticated to effectively portray a teenager, and too young and beautiful to seem 50-ish -- but the film creates an atmosphere and mood that brings the characters to life.
We see how Gavin's character evolves through George's eyes; from a man she views as simple and steadfast to a complicated, conflicted person whom she deeply loves. I like how D'Onofrio is able to convey with his body language all the ages of his character. He is a young, strapping man at the beginning, a hardworking family man in the middle, and a slower, older, more thoughtful man by the film's conclusion. His "acting" seems natural throughout - perhaps that is why Scacchi's performance (though she is undeniably beautiful) seems somewhat lesser in comparison. She is one note only.
It is somewhat sad, but also uplifting - a great film to watch alone when you need a good cry, or to watch with your girlfriends when you all do! And perhaps a lesson to get to know someone very well before you write them off as not fitting into your life...
