Alias / 双面女间谍的评论

I can’t believe I’m defending Lauren Reed. But, anyway…here goes my ramble
There’re enough mediocre indie films to argue the cliché that in the real world, there’s no black or white, just grey. Alias is just too cool for that. Indeed Jack bears his dark secrets and Sark has his tender moments, but at the end of the day there’s always a clear line between good and evil (that rule brought extreme difficulty to the writers’ room when they reached the ending).
And Lauren Reed is evil.
It is logical to hate Lauren the way one hates Sloane or Curvee. Bad guys are bad guys, they do evil things, and we hate them.
But is it really fair to add to her the guilty charge of destroying S/V’s happiness?
My answer is: NO. That is as ridiculous as blaming the enemies for your countrymen’s betrayal when two nations are at war. But still, many people do that, for it’s much easier to blame, or partly blame the enemy state (since they’re already evil) than to admit that those of your countrymen are simply not strong enough.
Back to my previous mommy/children/teacher comparison. Only Lauren Reed is not exactly a teacher in this situation but rather the “test”. Lauren was like a task to Vaughn, and he didn’t pass it. Yes, many disappointed parents can be furious enough to blame their children’s failure on the test being too difficult instead of their children’s incapacity, because it’s easier. S/V lovers blame came to blame Lauren in the same way.
In this sense, Lauren Reed, as a “test”, can be seen as merely a subject devoid of human emotions. (And her lack of even the slightest feeling for Vaughn just made the whole situation simpler).
Whether she was a loving and understanding wife who had the greatest sympathy for Syd, or a Convenant mole who would do whatever possible to keep S/V apart does not change her role in the situation. Only the former would be a much easier test than the latter.
Whatever the case, Vaughn failed the test completely.
“But is it wrong to move on 6 months after your loved one’s death?”
That is the same question as “is the test too difficult for my child”? Is it?
To answer this, one should first know that Alias world is not at all the same as that of Friends or SATC. No one will blame Big if he remarried after spending 6 heartbreaking months mourning over the death of Carrie Bradshaw, or Ross/Rachel in the same situation.
But this is Alias.
Like Syd said to Vaughn in that trembling voice at the end of S3E1, “After what we’ve been through…Vaughn, we live and breathe madness, everyday”.
And conveniently, just right beside him, there was Jack, the devoted father who would NEVER give up on his daughter and who actually FOUND some leads, to show what a pathetic willpower Vaughn had.
(Funny there is a deleted scene in S2 called “the one constant”. That short scene is basically Syd telling Vaughn that in the middle of all the madness happening around them, Vaughn is the one constant in her life.)
But one season after, we found out that her “one constant” is not that handsome lover with dark hair and green eyes, but her father.
You may argue that no love can be compared to the love of a parent, but I will just say this: Syd deserves better.
Michael Vaughn is a good guy, a sweet guy, but like Jack always says: he is just “never good enough” for someone as special as Sydney Anne Bristow.
