　　Bolt is Disney Animation Studio’s latest CG feature (they are also responsible for Chicken Little). It is a children-aimed comedy starring a fluffy white dog voiced by John Travolta, who is unknowingly acting in a popular TV show. Everyone including Penny, his master, go to great length to make him believe all his bad-guys-bashing and super-dog powers are for real. One day, while Bolt is separated from Penny who has supposedly been kidnapped by the show’s evil mastermind, he actually escapes the studio, which is in Hollywood and all suddenly ends up in New York City. There he meets Mittens the stray cat, who he thinks is associated to the baddies (like all cats are in the TV show). Mittens becomes his hostage while he attempts to get back to Penny, and the cat will have the hardest task to bring him out of his illusions.
　　
　　This somewhat convoluted plot is actually conducted in a simple, effective way and greatly supported by excellent voice acting, in particular from Susie Essman (Mittens) and Mark Walton (Rhino the Hamster). It does help a lot making the audience care about the characters. The movie, however, plays on used strings and the drama is quite predictable or even deja-vu. If the general tone is comedy, it’s far from being all jokes, with most of the comic relief provided by Rhino and the pigeons. The jokes are intended for young children hence don’t fly too high. For adults it is not a yawns fest but you may feel slightly bored while the story unfolds without any surprise.
　　
　　It should be noted that now Pixar is having some influence over Disney’s productions with John Lasseter helming this one. But do not expect the Pixar touch here. Either the change came too late for this one, or Pixar people did not quite establish themselves over the team. If technically satisfying, the picture is nowhere near Wall-E or even Ratatouille. Photography and artistic direction are a bit bland, with some shots lacking the level of detail recent productions from Pixar and Dreamworks got us used to.
　　
　　Overall, unless you got some special interest, or you’re going with kids, you can give this one a miss. It is by no means bad, but well, with Christmas coming, it will probably be not too difficult to find a better way to spend your money.
