Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis / 欢迎来北方的评论

This very much hyped film from actor-director Dany Boon became France’s second-ever top-grossing movie, beating La Grande Vadrouille and even threatening Titanic for a while. It came to Singapore this week so I finally had a chance to see it.
As probably should be expected from French popular successes, this is a family comedy. It is about a post office manager from the South Riviera region of France being forced into accepting a transfer to the North, that is, as close to the North as you can get without being in Belgium. There follow a number of stereotypes on northerners and southerners before all of it gets better thanks to a few good meals, good drinks and loud laughters.
This film says a lot about the power of marketing, hype, or maybe about the dimishing taste of French cinema-goers. I’ll gladly admit that some of my disappointment is due to the overheated craziness that surrounded it. My expectations most likely were to high. And Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis is actually a good comedy. I laughed and generally enjoyed my time in the cinema hall. However, by no means it is one of the best comedies I’ve seen, far from it. The story is very simple to the point of being predictable, while the characters are mostly very heavy caricatures without any depth. The dialogues, if often amusing, are not great and sometimes feel forced on the actors, causing the jokes to fall flat.
The final product fails to impress. It is a rather enjoyable, but forgetable movie that is certainly worth watching on TV but that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone as an introduction to French comedy, when there’s still Les Visiteurs or Les Bronzés Font Du Ski out there to enjoy.
6.5/10
