Mrs. Dalloway is the pre-text of The Hours. Michael Cunningham had imitated this classical novel of the 20th century comprehensively ranging from characters, themes symbols to artistic techniques. Amazingly, he adopted “the Hours” as the title of the novel. As most readers of Mrs. Dalloway known, since the original novel mainly concerns characteristic of the protagonist, Clarissa Dalloway, and represents Dalloway’s whole life through streams of stream of consciousness, Virginia Woolf renamed the novel from “The Hours” to “Mrs. Dalloway” before it got published. In the process of her writing, she combined many details together and the title “Mrs. Dalloway” best fit her ideas. Seventy years later, the adopted novel seems better fit the title of “the Hours” due to its changing time and spaces.
The movie, beginning from “she hurries from the house” (The Hours), has created a new story. Stories are often retold, reconstructed and reinterpreted, and it is common occurrence that some stories are rewritten in a post-modern intertextual way. However, it is one in a thousand that stories can be reconstructed so neatly and skillfully.
In the Hours, the novel Mrs. Dalloway is an important intermedium among the three characters who seem of little connections. Virginia is writing Mrs. Dalloway, Laura is reading Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa is the reproduction and extension of characters in Mrs. Dalloway.
