  此文是我的作業,得了98分,所以我想還是有一定參考價值的~因爲是外教的課,所以以英文寫作。要求以逐個分析故事元素,並談自己的看法。

  Plot Summary:
An old man read a notebook to an old lady everyday. In the notebook was a touching love story that happened between a young couple, Noah and Allie. They came from different backgrounds but fell deeply in love in summer. Allie’s family planned a promising future for Allie and stopped her from seeing Noah by taking her away. They all moved on with their lives since then. Allie soon met a charming lawyer and got engaged. However, she never really got over Noah, so did Noah. Allie came back to the place where they had their summer love and reminisced with Noah. There they fell in love again and never separated. It turned out that Allie suffered from Alzheimer's when she got older and she wrote their love story on a notebook in case she couldn’t remember. Noah read it to her everyday in the hope of recalling her memory.

  Characters:
Allie - The only daughter of a rich plantation owner. She was adorable and talented in painting. She was obedient to her parents. She tried to be the person her parents expected but deep down inside she knew there was something wrong. Noah brought the real her out.
Noah - An ordinary country boy. He had passion for life and a sense of the real beauty. He loved poems and music. He was a good listener and saw people through. He had been through war so he was persistent and forbearing.
Lon – Allie’s fiance. A successful lawyer, determined and possessive, never stood making mistakes. He gave stable life that Allie’s parents expected, but his passion was on accomplishments.
Anne – Allie’s mother. She was a conventional southern woman who knew right from wrong. She was the perfect example of a woman marrying to a wealthy and demanding man. She knew the advantages of stable life but also the affliction. She was the one who separated Allie and Noah, but she was also the one who encouraged them to get back together.

  Setting:
It was in the ‘40s in New Bern, North Carolina. There was a really nice river in the small town with swans on it. That was where Allie and Noah paddled in canoe and sat in the rocker by the river drinking sweet tea. They also enjoyed the breeze and watched sunset there. The warm creaky house is romantic and old-timey.

  Point of view:
The novel begins with an old man describing his life as the first person point of view, limited to what “I” could see and think. When he started to read the notebook to the old lady, the novel’s point of view turned to the third person that described thoughts and feelings of Noah, Allie and other characters.

  Conflicts:
Allie vs self –On the one hand she felt responsible for her parents and Lon. On the other hand she was so attached to Noah that she was eager to obey what she really wanted.
Noah vs Allie – Noah definitely wanted Allie back to him. However she just couldn’t make up her mind. Thinking about the possibility that Allie was going to leave him forever was a great sorrow to him.
Allie vs Anne – Anne forced Allie and Noah to break up and hid every letter that Noah wrote to Allie, which made Allie think Noah didn’t care about her and forgot her. That was the reason Allie finally made the decision to move on. When Allie came back to Noah, Anne found her and told her the truth.
Allie vs Lon – Lon was busy with his case everyday. He barely had time to be Allie’s company. Allie felt lonely every now and then. Nevertheless she tried to be understanding and support Lon. This changed when she later met Noah. All of her expectation to be loved wholeheartedly came back.

  Theme:
The Notebook is basically an unbreakable love. Why this novel makes people cry doesn’t only because the love is real and difficult. It is because the love of human nature brings out the deepest thoughts of us. For example, Allie loved painting but gave up after she left Noah despite of she was indeed a talented painter. Noah was her muse. Without our muse we hardly find our inspiration for art or for life itself. Also, Noah persistently read the notebook to Allie when she had Alzheimer's. Everyone felt sorry for Noah and hoped him to give up. However Allie finally managed to recall. We can know that miracles only happen when we believe in what we do and stick to it. Love can change everything.

  Symbol:
The most significant ones I can tell is when Noah and Allie had their reunion they went to paddle in a canoe on a river full of white swans. Then they got caught up by a sudden thunderstorm. I think there are at least three symbols here. Firstly, in Bible, the book of Genesis, Noah is the name of a righteous man who made a covenant with God. He built an ark for the flood. The flood washed away sin in the world. In The Notebook, Noah was righteous too. He knew what he wanted and be faithful to his love. Secondly, the ark in Bible is like the canoe in the Notebook. So are the flood and the thunderstorm. Noah and Allie paddled in a canoe in the storm represents their burden of the past had been washed away. They renewed. After the storm they got back together. Lastly is the white swans. White swans always stand for nobility, purity and true love. It shows how sincere their love was. Swans can also stand for solitude, however. It shows Noah had been all alone.

  Tone:
The author is objective and impersonal toward characters. Every character has their flaws and merits. The tone is also compassionate because the words manage to bring us to tears. The conversations are smart and refined. There is hardly any irony or playfulness but the novel isn’t boring at all.

  Style:
The author picks the words carefully so that we see many good adjectives and a lot of figurative which bring the scenes and characters alive. The manner is graceful and compelling. In The Notebook the author deliberately arranges the structure as A-B-A. It begins with an old man reading a notebook to an old lady, then the most chapters are about the love story. The last chapter is back to the start, where the old man finished reading. We can suddenly tell the old man was Noah and he was reading his love story between the old lady, who was Allie. The structure gives suspense and the fun to read chapter and chapter to find out the outcome.

In the novel Noah said: “The romantics would call this a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. In my mind it’s little bit of both.” I don’t consider myself as a romantic, but I think it’s a good love story. The love between Noah and Allie is like a delicate flower unfolds little by little. It’s graceful and restrained. Somewhat Chinese like this kind of love. However, when I make a plot of it, I find it kind of corny though (Two fell in love. One left and came back. They lived happily ever after). Maybe the author manages to write a very touching story out of it. Another thing I like about the novel is I can read it fluently without checking for words very often. The author uses very simple words yet they come together beautiful. This is the first time I try to read an English novel and I succeeded.
