Surrendered的评论

David S.Ware - "Surrendered" ,1999, Columbia Records 5/5, Masterpiece!
David S.Ware on tenor Saxophone, Matthew shipp on piano, William Parker on Bass, Guillermo E.Brown on Drums.
It’s one of my all-time favorites and I just played the recording over and over tonight, delighted, excited and finally, stunned!
The record is an entire hymn to openness, an hour-long ode to the pleasures of creating and communication. The formidable quartet, including other two prestigious icons of New York Free Jazz scene - pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker, played the music in a simple elastic melody, both inside and outside. Definitely the music that they were playing are something new beyong bop, fine, we call them avant-gardes, but they have roots, deep roots from chruch and blues!
The monster blowing sessions, with amazing strength and richness in sound, are the so-called"Free Jazz" in top quality, The quartet played great collective intimacy! I know they are improvising, however, it’s in an immensely sympathetic way. And Ware is roaring, you know, that’s just like flying, and also the most quintessentially, swinging!
"Music," David S.Ware ever said,"has it’s own intelligence , it’s all there in the stucture and melody, the rythm in the air, the music tells you what to do.". On another occasion,"Every stride you make forward there’s a wall you have to break down with a sledge-hammer, I would like to think that someone hears my music and says,’This is a new experience for me, it’s taking me somewhere I haven’t quite been before!’". For me, at least, it’s ture.
I still could remember the moment I got this recording something like one evening of 4 years ago, my last year in the university. On the first sight, it’s really an small eyesore for it’s shaky and saw-cutted top cover, and just cost me 10 RMB, the music palyed me thrilled from the first moment, however. For years maybe I still have not been real sophisticated about the music they were playing, but it really got me enjoyed.
There is no doubt that this is indeed art.
