Walden aka Diaries, Notes and Sketches的评论

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL
Jonas Mekas is no stranger to me. I have worked for him and I have studied him in my film class. I watched his Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania for don't know how many times, yet I was shocked at how beautiful Walden is.
The film is highly filmic. Chris asked me if it looked good on video, which reminds me of how beautiful it would look on 16mm. I know they have it at Anthology. Definitely on my Anthology to-see list now.
I can write a paper on Jonas Mekas and his special film diary and diary film, aka personal cinema. Anyone who's interested in this concept of personal cinema can go looking for essays on this. I am not gonna repeat them.
For those who are familiar with the New York underground, it is an even more interesting and beautiful film because you got to see everyone in the film. Did you know P. Adam Sitney would celebrate her daughter's birthday? I'm sure he does, but I have never pictured him as a father.
Jonas Mekas has a famous quote: I don't make films. I just film. This is the core of his cinema. I used to think that his films were nothing but a pile of footages. When I was watching Walden, I realized how beautifully the film is constructed with montage, image and music. It IS a pile of footage, but a lot more than that.
有的文章说Jonas Mekas的东西浪漫到不可救药,怀旧到self-indulgent。 I totally agree. But his films are beautiful. This beauty comes from a density of image and a sincere concern of the field and the people in it.
