THE most disappointing Mamet movie I have seen so far---and I have seen more than a dozen. I share the enthusiasm of many about this emerging artist. Just want to add one personal note: for a great soprano, Röschmann's voice is often beautifully subdued. I think it is this quality, reminding me of Marilyn Horne, that distinguishes her from Gens or von Otter or (the off-puttingly ubiquitous) Dessay. Pretty pleasant. Interesting beginning that doesn't get followed through. The Preston Sturges screenplay doesn't have the bite of film he later directed. Great performance; flawed recording. The sound is too spacious (others may call it "airy"). One has the same regret with the Budapest recordings. Lacks the immediacy of, say, Talich.......
