Seattle is famous for its damp weather and its own rainforest. Seattleites will say how rain keeps the city ever green, how clear the air tastes afterwards. The sunny gorgeous weather and blue skies draw Seattleites from their cozy little homes, ready to dry out and have fun. People go hiking, biking and canoeing. Folks work in their garden, wash their cars and attend outdoor concerts in the park, all in the same day. People host barbecues picnics and water-skiing. It’s a sin around here to not thoroughly enjoy every moment of every golden day.

My spirits ebbed during an April Snowfall when I first came to Maine several years ago.
I was beset by a concern that spring might not occur that year. The landscape looked forsaken
.Hills and forest formed a single grey, like the wash an artist paints on a canvas before the masterwork. But on May 3 that year I awoke to a green so startling as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills sky and forest revealed purple blue and green. The leaves had unfurled goldfinches had arrived at a feeder, daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.

The place, New York’s Letchworth State Park, home of the so-called Canyons of East
A 17 mile gorge cut into the central park of the state by the Genesee River on its way north to the Lake Ontario. Although overshadowed by New York’s other wonders, Niagara Fall, 60 miles to the northwest, the 14350 acre preserve has noteworthy attractions. In addition to a series of three falls that stairstep down the river and provide much of the Gorge’s usual drama, there are striking rock formations, including pillar-like cathedral Rock , creations of some 350 millions years of sedimentary deposits and erosion

This 19-century Buffalo industrialist and conservationist was said to have been drawn to the site in 1858 by a rainbow arching over one of the falls and soon bought land here. Letchworth deeded these holdings to the state of New York in 1907, an estate that included thousands of trees that he planted on this landscape once scarred by lumbering. Today, his mansion’s six guest rooms and suites are named after tree species on the park
