A Tranquil Night
Abed, I see a silver light,
I wonder if it's frost aground.
Looking up, I find the moon bright;
Bowing, in homesickness I'm drowned.
Memories of the Past at Red Cliff
The great river eastward flows,
Washing away
Heroes from time immemorial.
Stands, they said, Chibi Mountain
Where Zhou Lang of the Three Kingdoms fought.
Treacherous rocks piece the clouds,
Huge waves crack the shore,
Churning up thousands of snowy foams.
The land’s as beautiful as a picture,
But what a host of braves were once here!
That year, as viewed from afar,
Gongjin, who had just married Xiaoqiao,
Robust and beaming with youth,
With a feather fan in hand and silk kerchief round his head,
Chatting and laughing
When masts and tillers burned, ashes flew and smoke died.
The old kingdom revisited in fantasy,
You may take me for a sentimental fool,
Whose hair has been early laced with white.
Life is but a dream,
Time for a libation to the river moon.
采菊东篱下,悠然见南山;
Drinking (V)
Within the world of men I make my home,
Yet din of horse and carriage there is none;
You ask me how this quiet is achieved: —
With thoughts remote the place appears alone.
While picking asters "neath the Eastern fence
My gaze upon the Southern mountain rests;
The mountain views are good by day or night,
The birds come flying homeward to their nests.
A truth in this reflection lies concealed,
But I forget how it may be revealed.
